LG 47LE5400

2010 was a strong year for HDTVs where the ordinary 1080p displays are highly affordable and the 720p displays serving as fine inexpensive replacements to the bulky CRT units. 3DTVs are the main attraction for 2010 and they all render 3D content nicely while containing all of the strong features that LED TVs have. However, these displays are a bit expensive since they are new and not everyone is thrilled with the new technology. Fortunately, companies like LG refreshed their LED displays offering more features and improved specs to deliver better visual and sound experiences. The LG 47LE5400 is one of those models that aims to offer big without draining the wallet.

Technical Features

LG does not manufacture 50-inch displays, but the 47-inch display should be good enough compared to the 55-inch version for people that want to save a few hundred dollars. Since it is part of the LE5400 series, the LG 47LE5400 gets the same 4,000,000:1 contrast ratio which is several times better than LCD models resulting to gorgeous deep black levels and color accuracy. The many technologies included in this display aid in making this a complete performer.

Actual user review:
“THe LED is by far the BEST contrast of any HDTV we have owned. This TV replaced an LG 44 inch DLP TV, which during it’s time, was a pretty awesome picture, but like in all happenings, things change. The only con we have is: The speakers system on this TV is worthless. The TV comes with the ability to override background noise and bring the voice of the program/movie to the front of everything else, however the speakers are not good at all. After you get above 50 on the volume control, it goes to 100, everything is distorted, the speakers even vibrate. A surround sound system really brings out the true excellence of this unit. It was a good deal for an entry level LED at under $1200.00.” – W.Wilson (TX,USA)

Technologies

The amazing image performance starts with the LED Backlighting technology which not only improves the color quality and details in dark scenes but also allows the display to be much thinner without any downsides to the specs. LED TVs in general are more energy efficient as well. In fact, LG only labels their LED models as Energy Star 4.0 compliant because of the fact that they provide around 30% energy savings compared to their LCD models. Depending on the lighting conditions, the LG 47LE5400 can save even more energy using the Intelligent Sensor. This sensor automatically tones down the lighting if the ambient lighting increases. It also serves as a good way to reduce eye strain without worrying about adjusting the settings.

The TruMotion 120Hz technology adds some emphasis to the experience since it is double the frame rate of standard displays allowing fast-paced animations to look smoother without unwanted blurring. The image appearance looks even better if the right AV Mode is selected. For instance, when watching sports, it is best to use the “Sports” AV Mode. There are also “Cinema” and “Games” modes that optimize their corresponding content in both video and audio quality. Those that enjoy their latest movies will appreciate the 24p Real Cinema mode that the LG 47LE5400 since it shows the exact same 24p source frames that movie theaters produce.

The audio technologies are just as potent offering full support of Dolby Digital technologies allowing many Blu-ray and DVD titles to be enjoyed in 5.1-channel surround. The Infinite Sound makes it even better by enhancing the bass while the Clear Voice II technology adds clarity to voices which can be useful when playing certain video games or watching movies or shows.

Extra Features

The LG 47LE5400 can already do a lot on its own, but its functionality is significantly increased when connected to the Internet. It uses the Netcast Entertainment feature which allows access to a number of popular free services including YouTube and Picasa. Vudu and Netflix subscribers can also use their accounts straight from the TV so they can stream any content that they wish and it looks best on the display if the content is 1080p. The Yahoo! TV Widgets feature is also useful for getting quick access to various news sites and other sites to retrieve stocks and scores without leaving the current channel.

Aside from using Netflix or Vudu, users can also fill up a USB flash drive or any storage device with movies that are in the DivX HD format and plug them in any of the 2 USB ports to enjoy quality high-definition content. The LG 47LE5400 also supports JPEG and MP3 files as well.

Bottom Line

The LG 47LE5400 provides a stunning picture and a stunning physical look at a size that should go nicely in large living rooms. The high contrast ratio and Netcast Entertainment support are two of the biggest features that make the 47LE5400 very special. Although the $1,600 price tag is a bit more expensive than the LCD 47LD650 model, the energy savings that the 47LE5400 provides really show that LED displays are the way to go.

Actual User Reviews:
I’ve had this TV for about a week now and I am very pleased. The hardest part of setting up this TV is putting the stand together. When you first turn the set on the picture is clear but the colors are flat but once I ran the Picture Wizard and since then my household has been in TV/Movie viewing heaven. I teamed this set up with LG’s LHB975 Home Theater. The two systems work really well together and make movie time exciting. Buying the 47LE5400 from Amazon.com meant free shipping and easy returns if necessary so I bought with confidence. LG offered a three year warranty on top of the one year you usually get for $99.00 so I took it. All in all I’m very happy and look forward to many years of great TV/Movie viewing.” – T.Haile (IL,USA)
