Key Features

The 47LG90 HDTV is LG’s first attempt at LED backlighting for LCD HDTVs. This means more natural color with whiter whites and deeper blacks. In addition the LED local dimming technology where the individual LEDs behind the screen can be dimmed or turned off as needed thereby benefiting in energy efficiency. Local dimming allows LED-backlit sets to produce extraordinary deep black levels, which is one of the most important criteria in TV picture quality. It is this technology that makes a case of LG’s claim of an amazing 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Cutting edge technology like this however comes at a  fairly steep price premium but the picture is surprisingly better than most LCD HDTVs.

The 47LG90 also has LG’s proprietary XD Engine technology which converts low-resolution analog signals to almost high-definition levels. Its “Intelligent Sensor” evaluates surround settings with its 4,096 sensing steps to produce optimized picture quality. In addition, the 120Hz video processor with dejudder processing balances the contrast color, brightness and sharpness to present clearer, smoother images for movies with fast action scenes. As all movies are filmed in 24 fps (frames fer second), The 24p Real Cinema is another useful feature that allows you to enjoy movies with true film-like smoothness.

Included on the side of the unit is a USB 2.0 port that allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to it to access stored images and music. Format support is limited, so this isn’t a replacement for a full digital media box or computer.

The LG 47LG90 utilizes a unique speaker system tuned by the renowned audio guru Mark Levinson. It delivers an enhanced audio spectrum using minute vibrations to turn the entire front bezel into a unique invisible speaker system.  You will experience a clear natural sounding audio in a wider soundfield. In addition the Clear Voice technology amplifies the human voice automatically to generate a richer and deeper sound.

With LG’s SimpLink feature, you will have better control with the existing HDMI connection and other external connections.

Conclusion

Although it is a bit expensive compared to other LCD HDTVs in the market, it is in fact $1500 cheaper than the Sony XBR8 with a similar LED backlight technology. And with so many advance features that allows you to tweak it to perfection, the LG 47LG90 will certainly make a good companion for your dedicated home theater system.
