LG 47LX9500

The LG 47LX9500 is a top-of-the-line premium offering from LG, part of their flagship Infinia brand. It is a truly beautiful 47-inch unit with an incredibly thin black bezel and translucent edge that make it one of the most attractive TV’s on the market.

Screen

The 47LX9500 screen is direct-lit LED (native 1920 x 1080) which means that the LED’s are behind the screen, not the side. This allows what is called local dimming which reduces bleed-through of excessive white color, creating great black depth, as good as if not surpassing plasma models. However, it means that blooming on the 47LX9500 is a possibility for images with higher contrast.

The 47LX9500′s 1080p resolution delivers excellent images with incredible depth and detail. Both blu-ray and 3D DVD look great. The screen is very reflective and that can be a little aggravating. But, on the other hand, it is very good in low light or darkness due to the local dimming advantage. The color has great clarity and definition. For movie night with friends you’ll be glad to know the 47LX9500 has really good off-angle viewing.

The LX9500 screen is THX certified–LG was the first manufacturer to produce a 3D TV certified by THX. THX certification assures customers they are getting the best technology for picture processing, displaying reduced crosstalk in 3D and overall the best video experience. Graham McKennna from THX told cnet.com that THX was founded by George Lucas in the early 80′s and their mission is to reproduce the movie experience in the home.

“What we’re doing with the TV’s with LG 47LX9500 is we’re trying to recreate the color and detail that go in when the movies are being mastered for blu-ray,” he said.

Design

Infinia won a 2010 Red Dot Design Award in recognition of its peerless design. The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. At only 1/3 inches deep, the LG 47LX9500 one of the thinnest TV’s on the market. Likewise, the bezel is very thin at only 5/8 inches wide. The seamless, frameless single level design practically eliminates space between the screen and bezels making them seem almost one unit. The 47LX9500′s transparent edge extends a bit beyond bezel adding to its clean and modern look.

Apps

The 47LX9500 comes with LG’s Netcast which offers streaming video from Youtube, Netflix and Vudu. You can edit your pictures with Picasa Web Albums or access Flickr. Widgets include Yahoo weather, news, sports, and finance. There is even a Twitter app on the LX9500 so you can keep your followers up date with your TV viewing.

Connections

The LX9500′s connections are plentiful: on the back you’ll find a VGA connector, an audio input and output, three HDMI ports, RS-232, Ethernet connectors, and a TV antenna coax. There is a port for optional wireless HDMI so you can connect HDMI devices to the 47LX9500 without those nasty cables snaking all over the place. The side panel has one HDMI port, two USB ports, A/V jacks, and a headphone jack so you don’t wake your family when you are cranking the AC/DC video you shot on their last tour.

Setup and Performance

The main power and function buttons of the LG 47LX9500 are on the back of the cabinet which is a little awkward if you are near the unit and just want to make a quick change. Otherwise you’ll be using the cool 47LX9500 remote that has a button dedicated to activating 3D with one push. The remote also has a big backlit number pad and buttons for Backlight, Widgets and Netcast.

The LX9500 menus are clear and easy to traverse. You can pull up the Picture Wizard which will walk you through some of the many available calibrations for picture and audio settings. Choose one of six presets and tinker with backlight, brightness, sharpness, contrast and color temperature. For you real videophiles the 47LX9500 has advanced controls for gamut, black level, dynamic noise reduction and other aspects of the “Dark Arts of TV Picture Tweaking.” The Trumotion feature has four settings and lets you set judder and blur levels which help smooth out fast action on the screen.

3D and Blu-ray

We decided to take the 47LX9500 3D glasses for a spin. Keep in mind these are an extra purchase but they come with their own USB charger so you won’t waste money on batteries. Of course, everyone in the room needs a pair to view 3D.

We plugged in a copy of Avatar and the 47LX9500 was amazing. The war scene, which has so many things going on at once, maintained clarity and sharpness. Smoke, dirt, explosions, fast moving ships, avatars flying thought the air, bombs, rockets; all of it looked vivid and actually better than the theater version. The 47LX9500′s 480Hz Trumotion really shines in these kinds of scenes–combined with awesome Dolby sound it is a superior experience.

Audio

With the extremely thin design, the 47LX9500′s Invisible Speaker feature is a must. Even without dedicated woofers, at 24 watts of total output power per channel the sound is full and rich. Some 47LX9500 buyers opt for an external speaker or home entertainment system to take full advantage of the THX certified sound.

Energy

LED backlit TV’s like the 47LX9500 are normally less power hungry than similar CCFL or plasma units. You can add to your savings by turning on the power-saving feature. One drawback is that the picture LX9500 may suffer slightly in this mode.

Conclusion

For the LG 47LX9500 it does not matter if you fire up a blu-ray movie, 3D Video, standard-def TV or movies from your Disneyland vacation. You’ll get a super clear, highly detailed picture. Deep blacks are a byproduct of well-engineered local dimming, and blooming is minimized. On top of it all, your neighbors will be jealous when they walk in the room because the LG 47LX9500′s physical presentation is gorgeous; a super slim and sexy profile made possible by a smooth, modern, seamless design.
