Technical Features

In addition to the 1080p specification that virtually every other TV boasts, the LG 55LD650 features a much higher dynamic contrast ratio of 200,000:1 enabling the display to show off much deeper blacks and pristine whites. This is considered above average for an LCD model and it has plenty of technologies to back it up even further. There are also 4 HDMI ports which allow multiple HD devices to be plugged in all at the same time such as gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and many upcoming portable devices that rely on HDMI.

Actual user review:
“Before I bought this LG, I was planning on purchasing the equivalent Samsung. However, I had read some reviews about a rainbow effect that could be scene in reflections on the screen. I thought it was an exaggeration until I went to Best Buy and saw it for myself. The rainbow effect is horrible and can not believe that Samsung put that on the market. What I also found out is that only LG and Sony make a good matte screen in the 55″ size. The room that the TV was going to be in has 6 windows and 2 skylights. There was no way that a shiny screen would work. Anyway, I obviously chose the LG over Sony and I am loving this TV! The picture is incredible. One thing that I should mention – you’ll most likely want to turn off the “TruMotion” feature. It comes with it turned on by default and I thought for sure that it should be on. I started watching some HD shows and some DVD’s right away and was not very happy with this super smooth motion that everything had. It would remind you of a soap opera since they are shot with video cameras and have that same smooth motion. It’s hard to describe, but you would know it when you see it. I really didn’t like it, but the easy solution was to turn off “TruMotion”. Now everything looks normal to me. The internet features are really cool too. I am very happy with this purchase!” – S.Saunders (NJ,USA)

Technologies

LG’s very own TruMotion 120Hz continues to be implemented in their future displays because consumers really want to enjoy their favorite action movies and games with the least possible hints of blur. The TruMotion 120Hz achieves that up to a certain degree, but those that want something even better will be satisfied with the improved TruMotion 240Hz which is only featured in the LD650 series.

Users can even get more out of their favorite sports and video games by switching to the corresponding mode. The AV Mode provides this functionality and offers three distinct options which are Sports, Games, and Cinema. Each of the items is self-explanatory and they simply work great. As soon as the preset is activated, the picture and audio settings are adjusted for optimum performance.

If the picture quality isn’t satisfactory, users can try the Picture Wizard interface to conveniently calibrate their TV quickly. It presents some images that make it easy to check the quality of the black levels, sharpness, tint, color, and more. It is also ISFccc Calibration Ready which means that it meets the professional standards for calibration and contains some preset modes that easy to activate using the remote.

The sound quality gets some equal treatment in the enhancements as it has full decoding support for Dolby Digital titles so all of the Blu-ray and DVD titles that have this Dolby Digital logo will sound better especially if a 5.1 speaker configuration is set up with the display. Regardless of the speaker configuration, the sound quality will still be above average because of the Infinite Sound and Clear Voice II technologies. The Infinite Sound adds some zest to the experience by emphasizing the deep bass while the Clear Voice II enhances the voice quality even in noisy background scenarios.

Finally, the LG 55LD650 possesses some energy saving qualities so users can save money while maximizing viewing comfort. The Intelligent Sensor helps reduce eye strain by toning down the brightness levels automatically if the ambient lighting is sufficient. This sensor continues to work in real-time so no energy is wasted. It works nicely with the standard Smart Energy Saving Features that most LG users should be familiar with.

Extra Features

Perhaps the biggest extra feature in the LG 55LD650 is its ability to use a home Internet connection to access many entertaining services like Netflix and Vudu. Subscribers no longer need to use their computer to stream their high-definition content since the LG 55LD650 provides a nice interface to choose the desired title for streaming. Many free services are included as well including full access to YouTube and Picasa along with the Yahoo! TV Widgets service which brings all kinds of updates and news straight to the TV in real time. An Ethernet cable is originally required for this feature to work, but the LG 55LD650 is Wi-Fi ready as well and users that purchase the separately sold LG AN-WF100 Wi-Fi adaptor can plug it directly to one of the USB ports.

There is still another USB port that is reserved for portable devices and flash drives so it can play back any DivX HD, JPEG, and MP3 file formats without relying on an external media player. For a full wireless experience, users can also purchase the wireless media kit so it can transmit 1080p signals wirelessly to other newer devices.

Bottom Line

The LG 55LD650 still manages to be cheaper than LED TVs of the same size. It costs below $2,000 and all of the combined features make it worth the cost for a 55-inch display.

Actual User Reviews:
The LG 55LD650 was not available in local retailers so we went out on a limb and bought it sight unseen from Amazon. We had previously decided on an similar model from another brand, until we read about an increase in quality issues. So we changed gears and started looking at the LGs. Amazon not only had the availability, but the price and free delivery couldn’t be beat. The setup was simple (including connecting to cable, blu-ray, gaming system and surround sound). The picture quality is great. Someone else commented about sound issues in their review – we have not experienced any problems with the sound. We have it on a low setting and the sound is loud and clear. We also have it hooked up to our surround sound, but tend not to use it for regular TV viewing. We are very happy with the product and would buy it again.” – M.Johnson (MA,USA)

I’m an Audio/Video-phile. I’m willing to spend a reasonable amount of money on the ‘right’ product. Until recently, I’d been a die-hard plasma fan (assuming low-light environment) — my Pioneer Kuro has served me me well these last couple years. Moving into a new place, I needed to get something for a bright living room — LCD is the obvious low-glare solution for this environment. I decided to take a chance on this sight-unseen LG model, and let me tell you, I was impressed right out of the gate. My previous experience with LCDs was significantly sub-par black levels and lots of screen judder. I was pleasantly surprised not only at how deep the black levels were (admittedly, still not as good as the better plasmas), but also the smooth motion the 240 LG engine was able to provide. To be honest, it greatly enhances both 24-frame and 30-frame content to such as degree, that I find myself perpetually and pleasantly bewildered. Don’t hesitate to get this model. The value is outstanding. It looks great aesthetically and delivers with an outstanding display!” – G.Roberts (USA)

After our Mitsubishi 52 inch DLP suddenly died (only 5 years old) we decided to switch to LCD and be done with the hassle of bulb changes. This model had the feature set we were looking for within our price range. We took a chance and purchased it sight unseen, persuaded by the positive user reviews. We are extremely pleased! This TV has a very bright and sharp picture, with an overall image quality far superior to our old set. One of the previous reviewers commented on the illusion of 3D. I agree, the detail seems to pop right out of the screen. In fact, I think I prefer the 2D Blu-Ray of Avatar over the theater 3D experience. The internet features are also a lot of fun, especially YouTube on the big screen. Hookup was a breeze, and the calibration utility was very user friendly. Highly recommended!” – N.J.Melito (VA,USA)
