LG 55LX9500
The LG 55LX9500 combines style with practicality. It’s not just a television, it’s a conversation piece – and it’s also ridiculously thin. This TV set brings with it a very different take on what a television should be.
The LG 55LX9500 is an upgrade of the LG 55LX8500. The main difference between the two is that the LX9500 offers users a 3D TV experience. Usually we’d be concerned when there is only one main difference, but the LX8500 was the closest thing to perfection we’ve ever seen – so why would we want anything different?
3D isn’t the only impressive spec on the LG 55LX9500’s list of merits, in fact it boasts a 55-inch 480Hz backlit LCD display, Netcast technology, Clear Voice II and even the “Magic Wand”.

Design
At first glance, the 55LX9500 is as much a fashion icon as a function TV set. Unlike other television sets, the LG offers extremely thin bezels on all four sides of the unit – that means that instead of looking at thick ugly plastic, you get to look at a whole lot more of the picture. It’s an very stylish television – so going on first impression, this TV is off to a very good start.
The screen depth on this set comes in well below an inch at just 0.92 inches. That’s a phenomenal achievement by LG when you look at the goodies this TV offers. The TV is made of metal on the outside, and the screen is covered with a pane of glass. It’s a great TV – but be careful not to put it anywhere prone to sunlight, as seeing the picture will be hard due to the glare.
Glare aside, the 55LX9500 is one of the best looking television sets you’re likely to set eyes on any time soon. By using a media box you can make sure that it stays looking chic and stylish by eliminating the need for those untidy looking cables which connect to your TV. A media box is a device which you can plug all of your video input connections into – whether it’s a DVD player or a games console, the media box will stream the video signals wirelessly to your TV.
“I bought this TV 8 days ago at Fry’s on sale for $1,499.00 (55 inch LED 3D, 480 hertz). It was not a bundle package, no glasses and no 3D Blue Ray player. But hey, that is what Costco is for as separate items.
It is the thinnest TV I have seen (how do they do it). The built in speaker is in the rear so it faces away from you. I was not expecting to much from the factory built in sound system but it sure fooled me the sound quality is excellent. Soon I will connect it to my existing Philips surround sound system.
I set it up on the provided swivel base, plugged it in and went thru Menu Set Up (very easy). The picture blew me away, it is amazing. It is the best TV picture I have ever seen and I have been shopping many of them, all your Sony’s and Samsung’s come in 2nd to this LG Beauty. The clarity and detail of facial features, skin, hair and lighting effects are beyond belief. This TV is replacing my 46 inch 1080P HD LCD so I am use to some degree of high quality picture. I highly recommend this product but make sure you get it on a deep sale price because the retail price or sale prices moderately reduced from the retail price are all absurd. “ – beachlvvr (US)
Features
The LG 55LX9500 comes with two remote controls. One controller is similar to the controller that is used on the Nintendo Wii. The remote allows you to point the control at your television and then select the function you require. It’s pretty simple, and the pointer is very accurate – it’s aptly named the “Magic Wand”. The LG 55LX9500 also comes with a standard, full size remote control which is fully back lit. So regardless of how you want to control your set, you can be sure there’s a solution for you.
The 55LX9500 has an LED backlight, which helps produce a fantastic vibrant picture for viewers. It is one of the first TV sets that combines LG’s full LED slim technology, with 3D – so it’s not your ordinary television. With it being the first time the 3D technology has been used with LG’s slim black lighting technology, you’d think the unit may be a work in progress – but any such fears are proven unfounded when this device is put into action.
It also uses LG’s Netcast technology, which allows you to get your TV online. There are a host of applications available to users which include YouTube, Picasa and Accu Weather. Also included is Netflix, so you can stream new movies directly to your television using the Ethernet connection, or a LG wireless device. The set will even let you make calls via Skype, all it requires is a special speakerphone kit.
Aside from watching movies via Netflix with this television, you can play them directly from a USB stick as the TV supports the DLNA standard. As a whole, the menus are extremely easy to navigate. The menus are also highly responsive so you can breeze through them quite easily.
The 3D mode on this TV uses the active shutter system, which requires the use of 3D glasses. The 3D glasses are not included with the set and must be purchased separately, however the glasses are fully rechargeable – saving you lots of money in traditional batteries. You’ll be pleased to know that every set of glasses comes with a USB charging cable.
Performance
The LG 55LX9500 reproduces colors accurately and vividly. With just 10ms of lag, it makes this set a fantastic unit for gaming, movies and even sport. This TV is THX certified – a label which is synonymous with a fantastic movie viewing experience. The TV has been put through its paces in a system of over 30 tests.
A resolution of 1920 x 1080 is almost a given, and this TV set willingly obliges. The 480Hz refresh rate makes motion look smooth, making the television great to watch. The 1080p capabilities of this TV really shine through when watching 3D content – a refresh rate of 240Hz per eye gives the viewer a fantastic immersive and smooth experience.
On Despicable Me, Universal Studios’ first-ever Blu-ray 3D release, the jaw dropping sharpness and clarity enabled us to better enjoy the many obscure side gags within the 1.85:1 frame. 3D depth was realistic and offers an added dimension to the film. In a downtown street scene it sure felt like we were in the middle of it. In a shopping mall scene, the superstore’s long isles seemed to stretch on to infinity. The vibrant color palette really pops on screen, and soft tones appear natural and smooth. Although there was a touch of video streaking in movement it did not detract from the enjoyment of the movie.
The rear facing built-in speakers, although small, produced surprisingly good sound quality. Dialog remains perfectly clear throughout and the surround effects of the amusement park scenes were presented realistically.
Should you not be happy with the picture your TV is putting out, there is a whole array of adjustable options available for viewers – and if they’re not enough then you can even change to using the “Expert mode” that this TV has. In Expert Mode you’ll be able to adjust gray scale and colors – amongst other technical parameters. So for those of you who just aren’t satisfied with one of the standard viewing presets this set comes with, there’s plenty of scope for you to customize it and make one of your own.
Conclusion
The LG 55LX9500 is an all singing, all dancing television. It offers everything the competition offers and more. The stylish design means this TV will be the centre of attention in any living room – and that’s before you even turn it on.
Actual User Reviews:
• “When noticed this product was advertised at Fry’s for $1499,I had to call and make sure it wasn’t a miss print or some kind of administrative error. To my surprise, it was advertised accurately so I picked it up the same day. This TV is AMAZING, and the detail that I can see in comparison to my 47inch LCD 120Hz is amazing. The picture setup is easy, and you’ll be watching TV with clarity and detail you have never experienced before. I kept my old TV connected and did a side by side comparison watching the same movie through a Blu-ray player and the difference is very noticable, even my wife points out details that she didn’t see before. The sound is spectacular, and the voice clarity system ensures that the music/background noise doesn’t drown out voices.
I have not tried to use the 3D mode yet due to lack of interest in wearing glasses while watching TV, but if you look at the CNET review for this TV, it says that it has one of the best 2D pictures in TV’s reviewed this year.” – That Guy (US)
• “I read several negative reviews about the TV before buying, but took a chance since the price was right. The TV has some quirks in that it gets better after using it for several days. I think many of the negative reviews are based on testing the TV right out of the box. The true colors of the TV comes out only after several days of usage.
I am very happy with my purchase!” – Value Investor (US)
• “Saw an LG TV on display at local retailer and liked picture. Compared 2D THX certified version and standard 3D version. Later saw that this model was 3D and THX certified and the price was LESS than either of the others. Had to buy. Has a great pictures and even SD movies look wonderful with this TV and a blu ray player. 3D is cool and looks good, but even with 55 inch is not like movie theatre b/c you have the frame. But wow, love that the frame is so narrow. The glass gets glare in a room with mostly windows, but not enough to make me stop watching and in the dark, the black is so black that there is not even that “TV glow”. I would definitely recommend this TV.” – NicoleM (Baltimore, MD USA)
