LG 60PV450
A 60-inch TV for how much!? The LG 60PV450 is one of the new crop of super-sized HDTV Plasma’s slowly becoming available at previously unheard of prices. With an expansive screen and great sound, let’s take a closer look.
Screen
LG 60PV450 has double the pixel resolution over regular HD. You can see the detail and clarity, especially in close-up shots and detailed images. But what about the fast action video like sports and playing games? LG engineers had that in mind when they added 600MHz Subfield Motion Drive. This technology adds more pixels between the existing video frames. Think of it as adding another layer to your birthday cake. The end-result is action video looks smooth and crisp.
A day spent on the couch watching sports provided the opportunity to see different sports on the PV450. NHL, NBA and college basketball games all came across in stunning clarity. There was one hockey game that had an incredible series of open ice breakaways (I forget which one; I just had a whole pepperoni pizza). There’s nothing faster than a high-speed breakaway and this unit handled it with no problem—no blurring or banding.
Design
The LG 60PV450 has a massive screen but a really thin bezel. The total effect is dramatic as it covers so much real estate on the wall. LG developed the TruSlim profile with the goal of making the bezel as small as possible and the cabinet as thin as possible.
Your friends and family will high-five you when they see the PV450—the modern design fits nicely in a casual setting as well as more formal rooms. LG isn’t as well known for their design prowess but recently they garnered awards at the famous reddot Design Awards and other competitions around the world.
Set-Up
Grab a family member or friend to help set-up LG 60PV450. At 109 pounds and with such a big screen, you want to be extra careful. It will fit all standard mounting brackets. The flat metal stand it ships with is strong, stable and unobtrusive.
Once set-up, check the Sharpness levels. Some factories are sending out HDTV’s with the Sharpness turned way up to get a crisp image. The problem when you do that it that it is easy for the picture to get blurry from overcooking the Sharpness—the opposite of what you wanted.
Check that the ratio control is set correctly on LG 60PV450. LG Plasma TV’s have a 16:9 aspect ratio but many older shows were shot in 4:3. Select the “Set by Program” menu selection and the TV will choose the ratio by the incoming source video.
The minimum viewing distance for a 60-inch TV like the PV450 is around 16 feet. You can put it in a smaller room but be aware of the viewing angles. Also make sure there is enough room if you have it sitting away from the wall. This will actually help with sound distribution and ventilation.
One of the best LG features is Intelligent Sensor. It automatically monitors the light levels in the room and adjusts the picture. Explore the different PV450 pre-set viewing modes: Cinema, Game and Sport to further enhance your viewing.
Picture
LG 60PV450 has Picture Wizard, reference points that indicate the best tint, sharpness and backlight levels as well as other adjustments. One tip: set the black level, then the white level. With that set, tweak the horizontal and vertical sharpness as well as the color and color tint. Further, you can choose when different calibrations apply—for every viewing experience, or specific situations like watching DVD’s or playing games.
Our new Blu-ray edition of Brian DePalma’s classic “Blow Out” arrived just in time to see how it looked on LG 60PV450. This movie has plenty of dark, brooding scenes that displayed the rich, deep black levels famously.
Sound
“Blow Out” is mastered in DTS-HD Master Audio and LG 60PV450 reproduces the rich sound flawlessly. In the movie, John Travolta is a sound effects specialist so clear sound is important and this TV delivers.
In the past, one of the common complaints about HDTV sound was that you could not hear the dialogue when background sounds drowned it out. LG’s Clearvoice technology is designed to meet that problem. It can take the foreground vocals and effectively separate them from the background din.
Another concern consumers expressed was the experience of commercials being much louder than the program. Or when surfing channels, often the volume was widely different channel to channel. The LG 60PV450 has Auto Volume Leveler which moderates the sound source and levels them out to make your viewing experience more enjoyable.
As an alternative to the on-board speakers, consider a ZVOX external sound box. It is a single unit design that sounds amazingly like a multi-speaker setup. It has 5 front facing speakers including a hearty bass pumping sub-woofer.
Additional Features
One exciting development in HDTV manufacturing is the incredible gains in energy efficiency. The 60PV450 meets Energy Star guidelines in both active and stand-by modes, beating standard units by 30%.
A convenient feature on the PV450 is ISF CCC designation. Any service technician can easily coordinate settings to meet broadcast level guidelines for brightness, tint, contrast and sharpness. From there you can add the settings to a custom pre-set mode and access it from the remote.
The LG 60PV450 comes standard with multiple ports like 3 HDMI, 2 HD Video and 1 PC input. Yes, if you wanted to you could do your math homework right on the giant screen. You’ve never seen a polynomial that big.
Conclusion
In these tough economic times, all of us are watching our money like a hawk. At the same time, the advances in HDTV Plasma technology and the product choice is amazing. The idea of a 60-inch plasma from LG at around $1500 was a ludicrous thought not that long ago. Now it is reality. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to get a BIG screen like the 60-inch LG 60PV450, now is the time.
