Mitsubishi WD-60738

In the world of high-definition displays, 2010 is best remembered as the year where manufacturers switched to 3D mode so you can finally watch all of those great 3D movies that you previously seen on the big screen. Blu-ray players have evolved as well with the newest models being able to play back those special 3D Blu-ray discs. Once you own a display and pair of 3D glasses, you are all set to engage on the new dimension but even the 3D area is getting highly competitive with 3D LED and plasma displays left and right and they mainly consist of the large screen sizes so you and other people can get a feel of the 3D ride.

Many flagship 3D TV models max out at 55 inches which is big enough for most living rooms while the 65-inch displays are less common and might be too big for some people. Mitsubishi is one of the brands that are ready to serve you if you need larger requirements. There are even a few 60-inch models which may fit to your demands while being priced cheaper than the 65-inch models. If you need some extra features while keeping the value in check, the Mitsubishi WD-60738 deserves a closer look.

Features

All of Mitsubishi’s 55-inch and larger displays boast 1080p resolution so it is no surprise that the large WD-60738 model gets it as well. The display actually looks larger too because the bezel is very thin making the WD-60738 an attractive display in the living room. There are 3 HDMI inputs along with the usual sets of composite and component inputs so you can hook up all kinds of components from Blu-ray players to gaming consoles. Setting up your home theater is very straightforward because the Easy Connect function recognizes each device as soon as it is plugged in. You are given the opportunity to name the input immediately so you do not have to go through the menu again. You can also switch to that particular input immediately without going through any missing connections as it cleverly skips them.

Even if you are not ready to set up your home theater, you can still watch some HDTV content received via the antenna as it has and HDTV tuner built right into the display. The dual 20W stereo speakers do not have any bells and whistles but the low power consumption does allow the display to meet the Energy Star 4.0 standards. There is also a single USB port but that can only be used for maintenance and updates.

Actual user review:
“Even with the minor issues, this TV is an excellent purchase. It provides great picture quality at an enormous size, without compromising price. Unless you are dead set on wall-mounting your TV, I think this is by far the best TV in this price range. It has a great amount of features such as advanced picture settings, 3D capability, and internet applications…I think it would be very difficult to find a better TV for the price. “ – A. Technologies

The WD-60738 is positioned as the best 60-inch display in Mitsubishi’s current lineup because it has both the DLP and 3D technologies which are two vital components in getting the most immersive and modern home theater experience. Mitsubishi’s flagship 3D Cinema 838 series does not include a 60-inch version but the technologies are enough to make this display very valuable.

Both 2D and 3D visuals look better when combined with the Smooth120 technology because those fast-paced action and sports sequences look fluid without the annoying blurs. All types of content benefit from the EdgeEnhance technology too as it enhances both horizontal and vertical edges to create better pictures without much of the unnecessary distortion.

The unique 6-color processor improves the color accuracy by extracting the cyan, yellow, and magenta colors directly from the red, green, and blue colors for individual processing. Although all of these technologies work best for 1080p content, lower resolutions get some treatment as well from the Plush1080p 5G 12-bit video processing technology so these low resolution signals are bumped up to the gorgeous 1080p visuals while reducing jaggies and pixelations at the same time.

Extra Features

Just like other high-end models, the WD-60738 can utilize your home Internet connection by plugging the Ethernet cable from the display to the router. From there, you can use your remote control to access popular services like Netflix and VUDU where you can use your subscriptions and watch content immediately. You can also check your Facebook and Twitter accounts or you can browse news sites like Associated Press or The New York Times. These sites look terrific in the large 60-inch screen. You can also use the remote control to manage any other devices connected via HDMI as long as they have Consumer Electronics Control capabilities.

Bottom Line

The Mitsubishi WD-60738 is competitively priced at around $1,300 which is surprisingly a good deal since 60-inch displays look noticeably bigger than 55-inch models and the DLP technology is highly efficient in many ways compared to LCD displays. The 3D capabilities also mean that you won’t have to upgrade your display for a very long time.

This TV is an amazing bargain. True, you can’t hang it on the wall, but it looks great on a stand, and the thick part isn’t visible unless you view it from the side. There is a free software update that downloaded automatically. With this, you do not need the 3D adaptor or IR emitter, just a 3D source and DLP Link glasses. The picture is bright, and the colors well saturated. It looked good out of the box with the default settings. The picture is almost too good, with some cable channels looking much better than others, although all purport to be HD. Using a 3D Blu-Ray player results in a spectacular picture. The IMAX “Under the Sea” DVD really felt like an IMAX theatre experience. The depth, brightness, color, and resolution were stunning.” – Dr. Christopher Kent (Ramsey,NJ)

The minute I opened the box, I fell in love! It was beautiful! However, I had to wait a couple of weeks to actually watch it because of the bad weather. When he finally came, he mentioned that a lot of people really bad-mouthed DLP’s – as I already knew. Then, he looked at the picture quality, and told me that I really had a great TV. He was really impressed.

So, to all those who continue to disparage Mitsubishi DLPs – You don’t know what you are talking about. I love this TV!”

I’ve had this TV for a month and a Mitsubishi WD-60837 (also 60″ DLP) for 7 months. Both have a very good picture, though not as good as a top of the line plasma costing 3 times as much. It has less glare than plasmas, no image burn, and weighs a lot less than a plasma of the same size. You’ll want to set it on a short stand, around 2 ft high, for maximum brightness because the vertical viewing angle is smaller than other TVs. At 3 ft off the ground you notice it’s not as bright. My stands are 29″ & 30.5″ tall. Brightness diminishes horizontally too, but not as much and it’s still watchable from a very wide angle. I highly recommend the Mitsubishi DLP TVs. They are at the sweet spot of balancing price, picture, and glare.” – MSL (USA)
