82 inches is more than enough for Mitsubishi to fit 1920 x 1080 pixels on the display. Being twice the size of a standard 1080p display, Blu-ray titles and various video games simply look stunning and the 3 HDMI ports available allows a pretty standard home theater system to be built around this large display. Setting it up is easy too because the Easy Connection function displays a prompt asking you to key in a name as soon as you connect the device. Switching to the input is an easy experience too because any unused inputs are ignored to keep the menus uncluttered.

It is also very surprising to see that a display this size actually has enough energy saving specifications for it to gain the Energy Star 4.0 qualification. There is also an integrated HDTV tuner so it can pick up HDTV signals using the antenna.

Technologies

The Mitsubishi WD-82738 is categorized as a DLP TV because it uses the Digital Light Processing technology that Texas Instruments owns. The performance of this DLP technology is about 1,000 times faster than the ordinary LCD technology resulting to better sharpness and clear visuals. It is also 3D ready so you can watch all of your new 3D Blu-ray movies and games if you have a compatible 3D player or gaming console hooked up to the display along with matching 3D eyewear. Although there is other 3D displays out on the market already. The Mitsubishi WD-82738 is much larger and combined with DLP, the experience better matches a real 3D movie theater experience since movie theaters use the DLP technology as well.

Whether it is 2D or 3D, watching sports look great on this display thanks to the Smooth120 technology that makes the motion a lot more natural during those fast-moving moments. The benefits of this technology are seen when watching action movies as well. A combination of other technologies improve the picture itself such as the DeepField imager technology which continuously optimizes the contrast and brightness levels while the EdgeEnhance technology improves the vertical and horizontal edges so minimal distortion is achieved. It is also powered by a 6-color processor so the red, blue, green, cyan, yellow, and magenta colors are processed individually resulting to better accuracy. Playing back lower resolution signals do not look as good on a big screen display which is why the Plush 1080p 5G 12-Bit video processing feature exists as it changes these lower resolutions to the Full HD 1080p without the jaggies.

Extra Features

The Mitsubishi WD-82738 can connect to the local network and Internet via Ethernet so you can take advantage of the StreamTV Internet Media access feature which includes several applications with streaming support. If you are a VUDU HD subscriber, you can do all of your movie rentals directly from the TV. There are many other sites that you can access for free including social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as image sharing sites like Picasa and Flickr. Pandora Internet radio services are supported as well.

Many manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung, have a feature where you can control various other devices coming from their respective brands using the remote if connected via HDMI. Although it looks as if the Mitsubishi WD-82738 has a disadvantage, it still manages to have an HDMI control feature that supports any devices that have Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) features.

A large size comes at a rather huge price but the Mitsubishi WD-82738 reaches the $3,500 mark which is actually quite reasonable because the Mitsubishi WD-82738 is not only a large and attractive 82-inch display but it is also backed with DLP, 3D, and other useful extras found in many high-end LED displays.

• “I just got this set today and both my kids and I were speechless. This tv is extremely light for its size but yet you can still tell that mitsubishi put a lot of quality materials in this product while assembling it. It took me about an hour to swtich out my 55 LG with this and cables hooked up and ran a channel scan through my OTA channels. I had to run over the air because my wife prefers basic TV.least i could do for her putting up with this monster sized TV. It was able to pick up about 15 channels and all came in in pristine HD.I have a single cable running from my new yamaha avantage 3D AVR reciever.If you care to know my sources. I have a first gen PS3 updated via firmware for 3D output. I also have my xbox 360 hooked up and finally for TV viewing I have my HTPC hooked up to the receiver as well. so i only have one cable running from the receiver to the 3D emitter adapter then to the TV.We went with the superman returns blu ray for the first test run because there is a lot of fast paced action and i wanted to see what the 120HZ would bring to the table. I must say it was worth it as the TV kept up with the action with no blurs whatsoever and the colors were just superb. second we tested king kong on blu ray on that scene when he breaks out of the theater.
