Panasonic TC-P46G25

The Panasonic VIERA TVs came a long way where many of the high-end models received positive reviews from both critics and regular consumers because of the attractive features being offered and decent image quality. Now they are taking a much bigger step with the introduction to 3D HDTVs that offer more of an immersive experience. However, not all consumers may need the 3D technology and their hefty price tag alone may turn some heads. Fortunately, Panasonic will continue to work on cheaper alternatives including their Plasma display lineup with the new Panasonic TC-P46G25.

Technical Features

For a 2010 model, the Panasonic TC-P46G25 isn’t particularly stylish with nothing new to show in terms of design, but it remains sleek and should match any home theater configuration. It is capable of displaying imagery and video in the full 1080p resolution and other resolutions below it. It has plenty of connections including 3 HDMI inputs, a PC input, 2 USB ports, a LAN port, and all the other typical video inputs allowing a multitude of devices to connect to the TV. It also has all of the essentials for viewing the latest content including Deep Color support, x.v.Color support, THX certification, and surround sound.

Technologies

While the specs may not seem surprising at first glance, this VIERA model like many of the other models comes out strong with technologies. The contrast ratio isn’t even displayed and is instead described as the Infinite Black Panel where the black gradation is significantly enhanced no matter where the TV is placed. This allows any dark film scenes to maintain some of the elements that cannot be normally seen in standard TVs.

The familiar 600Hz Sub-field Drive also makes another appearance in the Panasonic TC-P46G25 which adds clarity to motion images to reduce aftereffects. It uses a special image-analysis algorithm to convert scenes that are in motion into dots.

Extra Features

The Panasonic TC-P46G25 is all about fun and convenience for the consumer offering exciting new extras for easier connectivity. The VIERA Cast is featured allowing people to view any of the millions of videos hosted on YouTube or check out any uploaded content in Picasa Web Albums. Other forms of multimedia such as music can be accessed from Pandora while additional movies can be streamed from Netflix. There are plenty of other sites where people can access news or stream live content from popular sites without charge.

New to VIERA Cast is the ability to engage in video and audio conversations through Skype. The service will be active June 2010, but it should be a breakthrough in audio communication once it launches. All of these features can be accessed as soon as the TV is connected to the Internet via Ethernet cable. There is no wireless feature, but a wireless LAN adaptor can be plugged into one of the 2 USB ports. A USB keyboard can even be plugged into the other USB terminal. All of this is made possible without depending on a PC.

The VIERA Image Viewer is a nice offline feature that allows easy transferring of photos and video from devices like digital cameras and camcorders to the Panasonic TC-P46G25. The TV has an SD card slot so the card can easily be taken out of the device and inserted into the TV. From there, users can choose any of the 5 display effects and 5 types of music to suit the background.

Finally, users of other Panasonic products get the benefits of the VIERA Link which makes use of the HDMI ports to allow digital cameras, camcorders, DVD players, Blu-ray disc players, and other home theater system components to be plugged in. The VIERA Link aspect allows the use of a single remote control to operate all of the devices.

Bottom Line

Some manufacturers are already stopping production of Plasma TVs, but Panasonic not only continues to push the technology forward, but also attaches a convincing $1,400 price tag which is reasonable for a 46-inch TV that is rich in connectivity features. There is nothing really groundbreaking in any other aspect aside from the excellent black levels, but average consumers that want to make the most out of their high definition content should enjoy the Panasonic TC-P46G25 for its price.
