Many manufacturers are introducing LED TVs as a response to the many loyal consumers that are suffering from the disadvantages of Plasma TVs. Although these LED TVs delivered on their promises, they still turn out to be more expensive than the ordinary LCD displays that are also continuing to sell well. Panasonic has their own lineups of LED and LCD displays, but they are not giving up on the plasma just yet. In fact, Panasonic has something new for VIERA fans called the S2 Plasma series. The series include six sizes all having the same features and design elements with the Panasonic TC-P46S2 being the second least expensive of the group.

Technical Features

There is nothing really mind blowing about the Panasonic TC-P46S2 at first glance since many manufacturers in the past have made impressive looking TVs to match their home theater setup. However, the TCP46S2 has a few tricks up its sleeve including the “Clean Touch” bezel. This bezel does not concentrate on thinness like some other models, but it does take the unique path in being fingerprint resistant so the design stays clean and fresh. There is no presence of lead or mercury either increasing the overall lifespan of the unit and its environmental friendliness.

It is also environmental friendly on its power consumption as well swiftly going up to the latest Energy Star 4.0 standards. Panasonic claims that the display should last around 30 years assuming that the day is used 8 hours per day. After that point, the display brightness will reduced by half so it still remains functional.

The Panasonic TC-P46S2 is out to capture the hearts of both movie and gaming enthusiasts alike. The high 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio is a great for enjoying the latest Blu-ray titles with exceptional black levels. Gaming is also good thanks to the “Game Mode” option which further enhances dark image clarity and image response time as well. There are a total of 3 HDMI inputs which should be enough to plug in a gaming console and a Blu-ray or media player along with an additional portable device.

Technologies

The NeoPDP Panel technology makes yet another appearance in the S2 plasma series and it is very much welcome as it supplements the existing specifications rather well. It aids on the power consumption side and shortens the image frame display time resulting to reduced afterimages. The luminous efficiency is also tripled to improve the image quality. The 600Hz Sub-field drive present in older models also reprises its role in analyzing image and motion data to reduce the time it takes to display frames.

Extra Features

With a minimalistic set of features, only budget consumers will be impressed with the overall presentation of the Panasonic TC-P46S2. Fortunately, the S2 plasma series also bring out some other useful features to attract other consumers that want to save money.

The highlight of the extras is the VIERA Image Viewer. Although it is a stripped down version of the VIERA Image Viewer found in higher-end models that support video playback, it can still read the popular SD card formats used by a majority of point-and-shoot digital cameras. The SD card is the only means of input as it lacks a USB port, but the setup remains easy requiring users to take out the SD card from the camera and place it in the slot. Any HD images stored in the card will look great.

The VIERA Link is also featured which gives another benefit to owners of other Panasonic devices like the Lumix lineup of digital cameras and various DVD and Blu-ray players. Like similar technologies offered by other manufacturers, VIERA Link takes advantage of the HDMI connectivity to allow full interaction of these devices using only one remote control.

Bottom Line

The Panasonic TC-P46S2 costs around $1,100 which is considered low compared to modern plasma displays of the past. Even some of the most minimalistic TVs still impress customers because of its large display and the Panasonic TC-P46S2 is an example of a 46-inch TV done just right. Plasma TVs are still in the game and manage to get the power savings right too. Aside from the power consumption, the refined bezel design is a refreshing upgrade to the previous plasma series.
