Panasonic TC-P50C2
Plasma displays are not as abundant as previous years because several manufacturers are focusing more on the better performing LED displays while the ordinary LCD displays are for the budget market. But there are some other manufacturers like Panasonic that simply refuse to let the plasma technology die. In fact, some manufacturers decided to evolve these plasma technologies by adding next-generation 3D features putting them in-line with other 2010 displays. They are also not leaving out the budget-minded people either so you can get a large 50-inch plasma display for under $1,000. The Panasonic TC-P50C2 promises great value with plasma benefits on a large screen.

Features
Most 50-inch displays boast 1080p resolutions but the TC-P50C2 only manages to display visuals in 720p just so the display can retain a low price tag. This might be seen as a setback by people that want to enjoy the best image quality possible but 720p high definition is quite impressive especially when compared to the standard 480p that DVD titles use. You will probably notice some slight differences in the image quality since 1080p resolutions really shine on the larger displays but 720p resolutions look good because of the 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio which makes it even better than the budget 1080p LCD TVs in terms of brightness and contrast. With 2 available HDMI ports, the most common setup would consist of a media player such as a Blu-ray or DVD player and a gaming console.
The plasma technology is primarily responsible for the larger screen and good contrast ratio but there are common drawbacks such as the power consumption. But Panasonic implemented their own improvements to make these 2010 VIERA models highly energy efficient scoring Energy Star 4.0 certifications alongside the other Panasonic VIERA models. This means that you should not run into any brightness issues for the next 30 years providing that you use the display for 8 hours a day which means that the TV should last even longer if you spend less time with it.
“I’ve had this TV almost a week and like it more everyday. Bought it from Best Buy for $680 with free delivery and set up. When the delivery guys set it up, thye told me that in order to get the picture that I saw in the showroom, that I had to switch out my Direct TV receiver and dish to HD. Called Direct TV and had the HD dish and receiver installed. Boy, what a difference. I can’t get over how great the picture is, and you can’t beat the price.” – RG Abdalla (USA)
Technologies
There are not many technologies found in the Panasonic VIERA C2 series including TC-P50C2 since it targets budget consumers. But the quality isn’t below average and watching the latest high-definition Blu-ray titles or playing the latest Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 games look lively. The display makes use of the 600 Hz Sub-field Drive so it can effectively analyze every motion frame and convert it to data so it can be processed much faster. The end result is more fluid motions and reduced aftereffects.
Extra Features
While the technologies that power the image are on the minimal size, the TC-P50C2 adds even more value by adding a few nifty extras so that small but functional home theater setups are possible. If you have a digital camera that stores its photos in an SD card, you can view these photos on the massive 50-inch display by taking out the SD card and putting it in the TC-P50C2′s built-in SD card slot. Then you just need to launch the VIERA Image Viewer where you can view these photos in great contrast and detail without worrying about USB cables and the like. Think of your new TC-P50C2 as the largest digital picture frame in the living room.
It also serves as the main center for all your other Panasonic devices that you have lying around as long as these devices support the VIERA Link feature. Any devices that have the VIERA Link logo can pair up with the TC-P50C2 very easily. The HDMI cable is used to connect the device into one of the two ports so this function can be used. This allows the TC-P50C2 remote control to control the device as well. A good combination would be to connect the VIERA display with a compatible Panasonic Blu-ray player.
Bottom Line
50-inch displays used to be very hard to purchase because of their hefty price tags and even higher shipping costs. Combined with the energy usage, large plasma displays were reserved for people that really want to spend more on a home cinema experience. Now more effort is put into 3D and LED displays while plasma HDTVs like the TC-P50C2 manage to be less. The $850 price tag makes this a fine deal for anyone looking to upgrade an old living room TV. The prices may even drop down further if Panasonic reveals some newer 2011 models. The TC-P50C2 is basic but it does the basics right proving that the 720p specification does not the affect the overall quality of a display as a whole.
Actual User Reviews:
• “Bought this tv as my first plasma about a week ago (my other tv is an lcd) and I have nothing but good things to say about it so far. Picture quality is great with blu-ray, from 6 ft away from the tv I don’t see the point in paying more for the 1080. No motion blur or color problems so far, looks amazing! Speakers on the TV are decent, but if you will be watching movies or really want a good experience i’d recommend an external speaker setup. I have had no problems with the tv dimming or anything like some of the other reviews. The TV does get a bit of glare, but with the blinds closed I haven’t had any problems watching movies so far.” – C Brame (Greensboro, NC)
• “I received this tv a couple of weeks ago. It seems I am never truly happy with anything and I figured this Plasma tv would be no different. I absolutely love this tv. I was hesitant on getting the 720p but now I am so glad I saved the Money because the picture quality is just perfect. The gloss black frame looks real sharp and I am still blown away by the HD experience. I highly recommend this tv. If I really had to find a flaw in the tv it would be the sound, it’s a little tinny. I have surround sound so I never use the tv speakers. I will still give this tv 5 stars because the picture quality makes up for the sound quality. Save yourself some money and forget the 1080 because you can’t tell a difference. Blue ray is crystal clear and love watching movies on my new Panasonic Plasma.” – mike king (CA,USA)
• “This is the first Plasma TV that i have purchased and I am very happy with it. I wasn’t willing to pay a premium to upgrade to 1080p resolution and the picture on this is very good plus I am not sure I’d be able to tell much of a difference between 780p and 1080p from where my couch is to the tv. Besides everyone that has seen it has complimented me on the picture which I think is a good sign of the picture quality. It also works very nicely with my Panasonic blu-ray home theater since they both talk to each other and you can control the sound for it using either remote. Also if you don’t want to buy an optical cable for audio it can still get sent from the tv to the blu-ray player using ARC technology via the same hdmi that is sending video to the tv. ” – Moses M (USA)
