Panasonic TC-P50G25
Some consumers face a tough decision on what HDTV size to get. Getting any HDTVs that are above 40 inches should take full advantage of the 1080p resolution, but newer movies that gained huge attraction in the movie theaters may look better in TV models above 50 inches. The price gap between a 50-inch and 46-inch TV isn’t as steep compared to the gap between a 54-inch and a 50-inch. The Panasonic TC-P50G25 proves this point having a $1,500 price tag which is just $100 more than the 46-inch version of the same model. The G25 series is rich in features so getting the biggest possible TV without spending too much extra is recommended.

Technical Features
The technical features alone show that the Panasonic TC-P50G25 is up to the modern times by having the same familiar sleek design to blend in with any home theater system. It also offers a little bit more in terms of connectivity with 2 HDMI inputs and an additional HDMI input on the side which is enough for hooking up a Blu-ray player, gaming console, and other HDMI devices like laptops.
The excellent quality can be summed up with the THX certification which means that the black levels pass the THX standards. This means that movies should look and sound good just as the filmmakers intended. The energy and environmental features aren’t as emphasized, but it does pass the Energy Star certification which should be enough to make it more attractive than the other power consuming TVs.
“This Panasonic G25 is amazing. Clear, crisp picture. Colors are amazing, unlike an LCD. You never would know the difference unless you saw a plasma. Unfortunately plasmas got a bad rap years ago and people shy away from them. This model (as do others including Samsung) have built in image retention elimination devices. Follow the break in for the first 100 hours and you have nothing to worry about. The sound levels aren’t bad, you probably have a surround system anyway so it doesn’t matter. This picture gets better and better as it breaks in. All store demos are pretty crappy and usually the plasmas are off to the side. If stores used a good setup and dialed in the sets it’s unbelievable how many they would sell, but most people drift to the big bright LCD or LED. This TV is bright and colors are unmatched. Hockey games and fast paced sports are crap on LCD, but on plasma when the hockey players stop, you can see every sliver of ice fly through the air. Plasmas are less money and better picture than an LCD, why buy an LCD? I looked at the Samsung, however they have a really bad rep for buzzing. Get it, dial in your settings and you too will be blown away. – Bandit N. (AZ, USA)
Technologies
The Infinite Black Panel technology is exclusive to VIERA TVs and performs beautifully no matter the lighting condition as black levels stay deep. Playing back films that have dark scenes should show some added details which isn’t very visible in ordinary TVs. It is combined with the 600Hz Sub-field drive to make motions very fluid as well. All of the technologies and technical features make the Panasonic TC-P50G25 excellent for watching movies.
Extra Features
The Panasonic TC-P50G25 isn’t just for movie fanatics because of the extra connectivity features offered. In fact, people that like to stay in touch with friends and family in other areas can take advantage of the new Skype service that will be active June 2010. A webcam and keyboard can be plugged in the 2 USB ports to make the most out of the experience.
The Skype service integrates will the familiar VIERA Cast interface where numerous other sites can be accessed like YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Twitter, and other sites that allow streaming including Netflix, Pandora, and FOX Sports. Connecting the Ethernet to the port makes this all happen and a wireless option can be used too by plugging in a wireless LAN adaptor (sold separately) to the USB port. All of this content can be enjoyed without using the PC and the 50-inch aspect makes this much better than a standard desktop monitor.
Viewing images on the large 50-inch panel is also better than uploading pictures to the computer. Now digital cameras that can take or record 1080p content can be viewed nicely on the large display through the use of the SD card reader. It even has a slideshow feature offering 5 different types of background music and 5 visual effects.
Like many of the older VIERA models, the VIERA Link feature is retained for the Panasonic loyalists who own Lumix digital cameras, Panasonic Blu-ray and DVD players, and other Panasonic devices that use HDMI for connectivity. Now the single remote control that comes with the TV can be used to operate all of these devices as long as they stay connected.
Bottom Line
The Panasonic TC-P50G25 is proof that the plasma TVs are not dead yet and their price tag shows that it is a nice and affordable alternative to the other LED TVs made available. Some may argue that the LED TVs boast better quality, but the plasma TVs should be enough to impress movie lovers and avid gamers alike. It is undeniable that the TC-P50G25 stands as one of the most valued TVs on the market today especially considering the extra connectivity features and Skype support thrown in.
Actual User Reviews:
• “Have had this TV for 4 weeks now what a great picture was going between Plasma and LED. Now with it installed on the wall and up and running I would recommend it. This is great for movies, great off angle picture great for football and world series in HD; great with PS3 and blu-rays. Room does not have to be dark. No glare problems. Setup was easy, got the wireless LAN connected without a problem. Get at Amazon was the least cost. Delivery was two days early and good service. Would not hesitate to do it again.” – J.P.Kirvin (USA)
• “Impressive picture on the Panasonic TC-P50G25. I used a Cat 6 cable for the internet and it works great. The internet choices are very limited so I’m hopeful that more options will be added in the near future. Netflix does work well. I was surprised that this flat screen is still so thick and heavy like the older models but my main concern was a good picture and it’s much better than what we expected. You won’t be disappointed.” – Itsmejs (USA)
• “I’ve never done this but this Panasonic Plasma has made me proud. I went from a 50″ S1 to this and man it is night and day. Feels like you’re looking in a window and watching bluray movies is like seeing them for the first time. I even stare at commercials now. Haha my wife who couldn’t care less said wow look at the skin tone and stuff in the background. Yup it’s really nice only have it in THX mode till break is done but I don’t think I’m going to mess with this one. It’s great! For the price it’s a no brainer. Hope this helps with anyone as picky as I was store to store review after review. Glad I grabbed this one!!” -Espo (USA)
