Panasonic TC-P50U2

Panasonic is one of the several manufacturers that still see the need of making plasma displays since they are often larger than their LCD counterparts and end up being cheaper than the impressive LED models. Although they have a few disadvantages, plasma TVs are a great choice for people that have room for TVs as large as 50-inches but do not want to spend too much money. Many manufacturers outfit these large displays with advanced features to make them more appealing but they usually exceed $1,000 or even $1,500. The Panasonic TC-P50U2 serves as a solution for people that want to spend less than the average amount and it has some nice features to boot too.

Features

The Panasonic TC-P50U2 is the larger of the two models in the VIERA U2 plasma series and while there is a similar Panasonic TC-P50C2 mode, the TC-P50U2 has the resolution advantage being capable of displaying full HD resolution (1080p). This means that users can run all of their favorite high-definition clips, movies, and games with amazing detail and enthusiasts will clearly see the difference since the large 50-inch panel emphasizes these pixels. Combined with a good design, the TC-P50U2 is a fine addition to any small home theater setup.

The TC-P50U2 also happens to be light on the energy consumption which shows Panasonic’s commitment to making their displays greener than ever including the budget models. The Energy Star 4.0 certification is proof that the TC-P50U2 can be used with confidence and the display even lasts longer than the average plasma display. The TV will have to be used 8 hours a day for over 30 years straight before the brightness levels are cut in half.

In fact, the display is gorgeous with a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio which is far more than the LCD models and ranks right up with some of the LED models which cost far more than the TC-P50U2. Users can set up a basic home theater system by hooking up a single Blu-ray player or gaming console in any of the 2 HDMI ports on the back. There is also one additional HDMI port on the side so both devices can be hooked up or a digital camera or camcorder. If a gaming console is hooked up, the “Game Mode” feature can be used so some of the games with darker environments look better.

Actual user review:
“Just picked up my second Panasonic plasma and couldn’t be happier. This TV has great picture and just enough bells and whistles for my needs: 3 HDMI inputs and an SD card reader for viewing photos. This TV does not have anti-reflective glare (not needed in a dark home theater room), USB ports (who cares), LAN connection (I already have streaming Netflix through Roku and Wii), 3D capable (I personally don’t want that, you may), or a fourth HDMI input (don’t need it, you may). The picture is identical to any other model in the series, just significantly less expensive because it omits the aforementioned features. So just decide what inputs you need and pay for the model that provides just that and nothing extra. I have had my 42 inch for three years and it is perfect and I expect the same quality and reliability out of this one too!” – Robert (USA)

Technologies

Advanced imaging technologies are reserved for some of pricier Panasonic VIERA models but some consumers may not find these technologies to be a huge deal especially since the 600Hz Sub-field Drive does a splendid job in enhancing the overall viewing image just enough. While the 2,000,000 dynamic contrast ratio ensures good visibility, this 600Hz technology makes sure that the 1080p visuals are produced with clarity even while in motion so aftereffects are effectively reduced.

Extra Features

Watching HD movies on a Blu-ray player or playing HD games on a console is a real treat because of the large impressive display. These types of devices also make it possible to playback other content including images although some setup is necessary. The built-in SD card reader removes this dependency so users can view all of their favorite HD images without the need for other devices. Any JPEG images found in the SD card are readable regardless of the resolution so 1080p photos really look their best on this display. There is no USB port available making the SD card reader the only means of viewing these photos.

But if there is a free HDMI port available, a digital camera or camcorder can be plugged right in so any content being viewed is relayed onto the screen. It is even better if these devices happen to be Panasonic devices as many of these models support the VIERA Link feature which the TC-P50U2 happens to support as well. With this feature, the VIERA remote control can be used to manipulate any Panasonic devices hooked up by the HDMI cable.

Bottom Line

The Panasonic TC-P50U2 will set back customers by roughly $1,000 but smart buyers may find these TVs for prices below $900 which is very good for a TV of this size. The plasma display make this a good budget performer for viewing Blu-ray content and other forms of high-definition material. It serves as a worthy upgrade for older models thanks to the Energy Star 4.0 certification.

Pound for pound the best TV out on the market for the price period!!! Image quality is outstanding, SD looks good, HD looks great and Blu-ray’s are amazing. It may not have all the bell’s and whistle’s the high end Panasonic VT series plasma’s do but it has more than enough feature’s to keep me more than satisfied. This is a great TV, thank you Panasonic and thank you Best Buy.” – R.Garcia (CA,USA)

This TV is a great package for the price. However, this TV is made for dark light rooms because it is highly reflective. The room I have it in now does get a bit of sunlight that is slightly noticeable and can may get annoying. If the TV isn’t custom formatted for picture when watching Cable it may be blurry so make sure to format properly. Also I would advise that you should get a separate speaker system because the built in sound is not the best quality. Finally there are only 3 HDMI, 2 HD Component cables and one AV cable input so there is a lack of inputs. Despite these drawbacks the TV has a great size, picture quality (made for gaming and Blu-Ray), very easy to set up and adjust settings, and is a must buy for the price.” – TVGuy (USA)
