Panasonic TC-P50V10

The plasma television market is becoming completely saturated with offers from hundreds of manufacturers, and the Panasonic TC-P50V10 is the latest on offer from the lovely people at Panasonic. This is a 50-inch plasma television that comes with a massive price tag, and we have heard from some other review boffins in the market that this is a television for the gadget lovers that are less worried about price and budget and more interested in getting the clever bits of technology. Well, as this describes us to a tee we just couldn’t wait to get our hands on this television and see if it really is a HDTV geek’s heaven, or is it just going to leave us sobbing on a cloud as it fails to meet our expectation?

Design

This is another lovely ultra thin design at just over 2 inches, and the screen is framed with a glossy black frame that is about an inch wide. The supporting stand on the bottom is a good oval shape and gives a good level of tilt and rotation to enable this television to be stood neatly on many surfaces. Being a plasma television this product is light enough to be wall mounted but you will need to buy the wall mounting kit as an extra, and please take care that you have this attached to the wall by a professional as sadly accidents from falling wall mounted televisions have increased dramatically over the last few years.

The remote control has been thought out well and is well laid out and not at all confusing, and thanks to the VIERA Link technology can be used to control all your other devices that are connected via the 4 HDMI ports, which makes life easier for you.

Actual user review:
“I have been looking around for a tv for a long time and found Cnet’s review of tvs where this tv was an editors choice. I have been very happy with this tv for the last 2 months. The picture quality is phenomenal. I also just bought a ps3 slim and you can control it using this tv’s controller using the viera link button and allowing for the link in the slim. That for me is probably the best thing about either the slim or this tv, not having to worry about that awful ps3 remote. I am not a tech junkie so I will likely have this for another 5 years or so and right now I am very happy with that.” – K.Mir (Canada)

Key Features

The screen resolution of the Panasonic TC-P50V10 is 1080p and there is a very high 600Hz Sub-field Drive, and there are lots of Panasonic technologies that we have seen before that we know from experience combine to offer an excellent picture quality – not that it stopped us testing them all again just to make sure we put the Panasonic TC-P50V10 through its paces properly, you understand. Not just because we fancied playing in geek heaven for just a bit longer than is really necessary…honest! The other technologies we are talking about start with the 24p cinema mode, which means that films can be viewed in their original 24 frames per second rate as they were intended, which is excellent. We then moved on to the Real Black Drive, which is the color technology that really does sort contrast between dark and light as well as give black colored sections a true to life picture quality and shadows appear nicely black but do not lose definition. You can see all the things that are lurking in the shadows clearly. Finally, for clever kit surrounding the picture quality, there is Panasonic’s own image analysis technology that checks all motion scenes and where needed displays each frame for slightly less time than normal, which gives rise to a seriously crisp picture quality and takes away some of the blurring that can happen in high motion things like sports matches.

What we also like about the Panasonic plasma screens are the viewing angles that have been achieved, and as we have said before this is one of the widest viewing angles we have seen. You can sit just about anywhere, including way off to the side, and still see the pictures on the screen with no lack of clarity of crispness. This is thanks in part to the advanced AR filter, which reduces the effects on the screen from bright room conditions, so even sitting well to the side you will not see a reflection of your window, as the AR filter prevents this, which really is a nice touch as there is nothing more irritating that having to shut the light out of a room when you are watching television just so that you can see the screen without reflection or glare.

Conclusion

This is geek heaven, of that we have no doubt, so for the budget conscious amongst you this is going to seem like an awful lot of money for something you can get for less, and we think Panasonic would probably agree with you. Their target market is undoubtedly the technically minded market who just love playing with all the gadgets and gizmos and telling their friends and family all about them over dinner one night. For us this is a set we would be proud to own, but then we don’t get out much and are more than just a little geeky. Basically it is a case of you decide – the television is excellent but the price tag lets it down for most people.

Actual User Reviews:
I spent forever researching my first big screen TV. I finally settled on this one because, first, I really wanted a plasma because motion blur really drives me nuts. Secondly, I bought this one for its ability to process all the latest and greatest video and audio and interface with my computer and ‘net. In other-words, I thought this had the best shot of keeping up with technology for as long as possible. The picture quality is fine. I am somewhere between an casual viewer and a videophile. The connectivity is great; I am using all HDMI and Digital Optical. The menus are easy to use and the setup was pretty easy. The antireflection coating works quite well IMO. I have only one complaint but this is probably universal with anti-reflection coated screens; that coating is DELICATE. I managed to scratch mine and a replacement glass is $930 + shipping and install and its not currently available anyway. So Be Careful! The audio through the TV is OK for internal speakers. Overall I am very happy with this TV and recommend it highly.” – T.Teater (USA)

Out of the box picture is O.K., but after 200 hours at lower settings and after adjusting settings the picture is breath taking. While watching a program about sharks on Nat. Geo., I felt like I was in the water with them – so realistic. During football games not only can you see that the field is green but you can make out the blades of grass. It’s unbelievable.” – A.Juno (TX,USA)
