Panasonic TC-P65S1

Plasma televisions have very quickly gone from being the newest next technology to the accepted standard as top quality television viewing, and the Panasonic TC-P65S1 is the latest example on offer from Panasonic. It is a massive 65-inch screen and pulls quite a hefty price punch, so is this a television that you should be considering for your front room or is this rather a lot of money for not a lot of functionality? Again, folks – we test – you decide!

Design

This is a good looking television set, of that there is do doubt. The black gloss frame is about 1-inch wide, which is possibly one of the widest but with a screen area so large it works well without losing any screen definition. The Panasonic TC-P65S1 comes with the single foot stand that means you can stand this baby on the side; however, as an option you can buy a full stand for the floor if you do not have a surface big enough. For those who enjoy the space that not having a TV unit creates, you can purchase wall mounting gear. There are three packages available, the first just being the wall mount, the second includes some speakers, and the third has the full range of speakers to create that perfect home cinema surround sound experience. You do have to consider that these are all extras and add to the overall cost of the unit.

Actual user review:
“To put my review in perspective, I work for a major Hollywood studio and am pretty much a high quality freak when it comes to watching movies. I upgraded from a very decent 58″ DLP so I really wanted something that wasn’t just big, but also had great quality. After weeks I finally ordered this unit and was still a little worried. Now that’s its up on my wall and hooked up to my system I have to say I’m 100% happy! The image quality is stunning, crisp and shows every little detail you can get from a good bluray disk. Slow and subtle motion is smooth and fast action has no artifacts. When using a PS3 (which does a great job upconverting) even standard DVDs look pretty good. I’m not saying this is the best screen on the market, but let’s be fair and consider the size and the price. I don’t think you can find a better quality 65″ screen for this price. The stand that comes with it works great, but most people will hang it on the wall. The weight is not too crazy. I expected it to be much heaver considering the size. I really like that the third HDMI input is conveniently placed on the side along with a standard video input and the SD card slot. That makes it easy to hook a video camera up or watch some photos. I highly recommend this TV if you want a good size but still don’t want to spend too much money.” – D.Hofmann (USA)

Key Features

All manufacturers seem to be getting good at filling their high definition televisions to the brim with excellent technologies and extras to enhance the performance of the unit, and the Panasonic TC-P65S1 is no exception. This is a 1080p high definition television which you would expect on a unit this size and quality, and there is a massive 600Hz working here so it is little surprise that the picture is excellent. What we really liked was the viewing angle, which meant that the screen could be seen well by those who were sitting head on to it and also by those off to the side. It was one of the best ranges we have seen in a while, meaning that the kids can be off to one side, or the screen can be in shot of a kitchen area and still be seen by most people. What is also an excellent touch is the AR filter. This is advanced filter technology and is built into the unit and not an actual external filter, so you won’t notice it, but you certainly notice the benefits as it dramatically reduces the amount of reflection that can be seen on televisions in bright light with reflection from windows and the like.

The clever technical folk at Panasonic, who fear sunlight and spend their days in darkened rooms creating clever bits of technology have added their image analysis technology which doesn’t make a lot of sense to most of us, but basically works on motion scenes such as sport and the like and by showing each frame for a shorter time clears up the image quality and leaves a crisp image which really is clever. This Panasonic TC-P65S1 is one of their Viera models and features a lot of new gadgets to enhance the performance not least the Real Black Drive system which sorts the color beautifully, and sorts problems that normally occur in other units with displaying the contrast between light and dark, and the depths of black that can be achieved. This newer technology seems to work really well and the contrast of image quality between this and another set was remarkable, with the Panasonic giving the more true to life display in all tests we tried. We really enjoyed looking at Blu-ray DVD on this screen too.

There is also Viera Link™ built into this model and this means that you can use the connectivity options, such as the 3 HDMI ports (less than on some leading competitors we have to note) to connect your other devices and then control them all through the remote control that comes with the television, which is nice as we all know how frustrating swapping remote controls can be when you are trying to achieve the perfect performance.

Conclusion

The Panasonic TC-P65S1 is a lovely example of a 65-inch plasma screen television and we really enjoyed playing with it in the office. It isn’t cheap and does need a big room but we’re guessing if you can afford it you are going to love the day you brought this baby home, as it really will grow on you.

  • “I hooked up the satellite equipment, hooked up my stereo, plugged it in, and WHOA! I just sit there for hours staring at it. I can just imagine how it will look when I turn it on! JK! I couldn’t have asked for more. It is so beautiful. The picture is as clear as I could ask for. Sometimes it’s almost 3D. Honestly, I was dozing off and there was a show on about space exploration and for a second when I woke up I thought I was in the cockpit of the spaceship soaring through space. It took me a few seconds to get back to the reality that I was looking at the TV, lol. Blu-ray really shines on this TV! This is by far one of the most amazing things I’ve every owned.” – M.L.Burdick (CA,USA)
  • “The set itself is phenomenal. I’ve owned a Toshiba CRT RPTV the past five years and the performance from this “budget” plasma is ridiculously beyond my wildest expectations. I would describe myself as technically savvy and I’m very picky about these kinds of things. It has a wonderfully sharp, bright, smooth picture that an LCD can’t touch. I honestly cannot imagine how much better a picture I could get on any other TV — it’s really about as perfect as is possible for anything to be in this world. There are honestly zero issues with this set. No buzzing, ergonomic or reflection issues at all. On a scale of ten, I give this set a ten+. Honestly, I could not be happier with either the set or Amazon’s tremendous service and value.” – E.Chang (CA,USA)
