Panasonic TH-46PZ800U

Plasma TVs have been around a longer time LCD TVs and are known for their deeper blacks and natural skin tones.  Panasonic’s stylish TH46PZ800U nicely balances image quality and innovative features.  Here are some of the great features that make the Panasonic TH46PZ800U an excellent choice.

Striking Design

At a first glance, the Panasonic TH-46PZ800U may seem to look like just about every other HDTV out in the market. However, the black screen isn’t glossy and the flip-down door reveals a set of nicely organized controls and inputs including an HDMI input, SD card slot, S-video port, and the rest of the common inputs.

Accurate Colors

Unlike the stripped down PZ85U model, the TH-46PZ800U does a great job in displaying accurate colors and vivid visuals. One of the many features that stand out in terms of color performance is the full THX certification in the TH-46PZ800U. Through proprietary performance requirements and advanced technologies, THX enables home entertainment products to deliver stunning sound and visual performances.

Actual user review:
“I agonized over LCD vs. plasma, and with the size and prior reviews of this model line, I went with it. I am totally impressed. The alternative at the time (November 2008) was the Samsung 46″ LCDs (the 650 and 750 series), which were a bit more expensive and not comparable spec by spec -the plasma gave the best value. Coupled with a $300 rebate toward the purchase of a blu-ray (and I bought the BDK35), this was a good bargain. I hooked this up to HD and am now having the same positive reaction to the picture quality.” – RGB (NY,USA)

Deep Black Levels

Just like the other Panasonic plasma displays, black levels are handled extremely well and although they are not the absolute best among all plasma displays, the black levels are reproduced well enough to enjoy dark themed scenes on the TH-46PZ800U.

Solid Connectivity

The HDMI port found on the front of the TV isn’t the only port as there are 3 additional HDMI ports on the back along with a nifty PC input making this a great monitor as well. The SD card slot makes it great for digital camera users as they can simply pop them into the SD card slot on the front and start viewing their images on the big screen.

No Pixel Left Behind

Every pixel coming from both 1080i and 1080p sources are displayed without overscan or scaling with the “HD Size 2” setting. This is a setting that in most cases should be left on and greatly contributes to the overall viewing experience. It also manages to squeeze in five aspect ratio controls for both HD and SD sources as well.

Great Overall Value

All these wonderful enhancements clearly make the Panasonic TH-46Z800U stand out even more amongst other 46 inch plasma displays. The audio quality was phenomenal when matched against competing sets’ built-in speakers. It sells for a less than $1500 at current street prices which isn’t bad for a TV of that size. The optional 24p mode does introduce some flicker, but not many other disadvantages bring this plasma TV down. The THX mode should be the main reason of getting this TV and the good processing of deep blacks adds to that. The TH46PZ800U is clearly one of the best performing HDTVs available and should be worth the investment.

  • “Panasonic’s Viera TH-46PZ800U is one of the most amazing plasma TVs I have ever seen. For this particular price point, it is pixel for pixel the best TV you can by, without a doubt in my mind. I upgraded from an LCD television, and let me tell you, I was worried about the change from LCD to plasma. (The burn in particular, and the grainyness of the picture). However, that was just not the case. I play a my fair share of video games, and I am an avid blu-ray movie watcher and Panasonic takes care of the burn in problem extremely easily. There is a pixel orbiter that (nothing that the naked eye can notice) moves the pixels a miniscule amount so nothing will burn in. I have had it on for 6 hours at a time and there was absolutely no burn in” – T.Abramo (USA)
  • “I have only had it for 1 month but I will say compared to friends plasmas the picture is great. I keep it for the most part on the THX setting which seems to give the best overall color. Overall the picture is crisp, fast moving video such as a snowboarding video shows not jutter and smooth motions. I like it and could not be happier. The menu is super easy to learn, which is always a plus.” - S.Dacko (USA)
