Panasonic TC-L37U3

Panasonic is producing HDTV’s in 2011 like they are going out of style- the Panasonic Viera TC-L37U3 is a great 37-inch model LCD “utility player” that can fit in just about any room in your house with ease and style.

If you are watching the Superbowl or the World Cup, you probably want a giant screen. But for most rooms, all you need is a compact, powerful, midrange HDTV that provides fantastic color at a great price. The TC-L37U3 fits the bill nicely.

Screen

The amount of technology you get (for not much money) is pretty impressive these days–especially from the new line of Panasonic HDTV’s. The Viera TC-L37U3 comes standard with IPS Alpha Panel at Full HD 1080p. IPS Alpha Panel is designed to provide wide-viewing angles while retaining great light transmittance. Color rendering remains excellent as images do not fade, or get the jaggies so common to cheap competitor LCDs in this price range.

LCD’s are less prone to the hyper-reflective glass that plasma HDTVs use. Panasonics Fine Black Panel technology brings down reflections even further, providing superior viewing experiences and sharp images.

Cabinet

For 2011 Panasonic has refined their One Sheet of Glass concept, which provides a single pane of glass as the entire front surface of the TC-L37U3. This allows it to blend in beautifully with any decor or color scheme, especially important in smaller rooms where the TV has a high profile in the room design.

In line with the slimmer profile are the Viera TC-L37U3’s Slim Front Speakers which fit compactly beneath the screen and yet deliver fantastic sound. Panasonic’s Modest Mask creates an intricately designed finish which is accented by carefully selected materials. The gradation extends from the center to the edges producing a dramatic design.

Set-Up

At only 30 pounds, you can place the TC-L37U3 anywhere: TV stand, cabinet, dresser or mounted discreetly on the wall. It will work well in a kitchen, bedroom, even the garage–watch the soccer finals while you’re repairing all that stuff you said for months you would fix.

In addition to its light weight and ease of physical set up, the actual on-screen video setup is also simple. Viera Link lets you easily connect other devices to the Panasonic Viera TC-L37U3. For example, you can connect a Blu-ray player easily with a single HDMI cable.

Another software function called Viera Tools answers questions that you may have about the user interface (or any set-up or channel functions). Just press one button and you get the information you need.

Picture

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One” came out on blu-ray recently—we are huge every Potter fans around here and it allowed us to test the Viera TC-L37U3′s on-screen performance.

I can’t tell you too much about the story lest I ruin it for you other Harry Potter fanatics but let’s just say this is as close to extinction as the Harry Potter clan ever comes to date. As one character says, “These are dark times.”

Nonetheless, a movie like Harry Potter allows us to explore the gradations in black levels on the Panasonic Viera TC-L37U3 – one of the things that separates good HDTV’s from lesser mortals is its ability to generate rich, deep blacks and crisp, bright whites while faithfully rendering all of the gradations in between.

Of course, we should mention this is only Part One of the Deathly Hallows two-picture series. So things are sure to get better for Harry Potter and his chums.

But, in this movie they experience a lot more problems than a bad game of quidditch. As such, the drama and color schemes are dark and moody. The TC-L37U3 reproduces the emotion on screen with lush black levels and consistently bright light reproduction.

Sound

The TC-L37U3′s 2 Full-Range 20-Watt Slimline Speakers are no slouch either as the lossless soundtrack of the Harry Potter movie pierced through with clarity and crispness. Teleportation spells, energy blasts, Death Eater attacks, forest chases, and Horcrux battles all are improved with the powerful punch provided by the Surround Sound system.

If you want to soup up your sound even more, consider the ZVOX Sound System which is a powerful sound box with 5 front facing speakers and a dedicated subwoofer for a very reasonable price. Need more bass? Get the optional external subwoofer and you’ll be able to blow your hat right off your head.
I think Panasonic engineers sit around and challenge each other on how they can improve year-to-year in every area of their HDTV’s–recently Panasonic won a design and engine engineering award in a prestigious international competition in the category of sustainable technology.

Somehow Panasonic was able to reduce the energy requirements of the by up to 43% from the same sets only a year ago. That seems impossible to me, but as always they exceed energy star 4.0 standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Additional Features

The TC-L37E3 comes with an SD card slot. This makes it extremely easy to see full HD photos and videos. Just take your SD memory card from out of your camera and drop into the slot on the TV to see your family having fun in full HD. For the ambitious, you can provide slideshows with background music and cool frames. This is always a big hit among family and friends at our house.

Game Mode is a great option for the crazy gamers in the family. The TC-L37U3 will automatically choose the settings that provide the optimal image for superfast response and no delays. Even dark scenes (and many modern games seem to be mostly dark scenes) you’ll get delicate details rendered with accuracy.

Connections

In our wired world of gadgets and toys, connections are important. Panasonic has not been stingy in that department as the Viera TC-L37U3 has 3 HDMI connections, an RCA connection, 2 composite and one audio input, as well as one PC and a digital audio output. You can connect external devices with Wi-Fi but you need to buy an extra Wi-Fi adapter which is sold separately from the TV.

Conclusion

Honestly, the Panasonic Viera TC-L37U3 is a “no-brainer.” The picture and sound are fantastic and the set-up is a snap. The 37-inch size is big enough to give you the impact that big screen HDTV’s provide, but small enough to fit almost anywhere in your home.

For the low prices we are seeing on the market these days, you should think about getting two of them.

The Panasonic TC-L37U3 will be available in Spring 2011 and the price details will be announced later.
