The Panasonic TC-P46X3 Plasma offers consumers an inexpensive plasma option with a great picture and fantastic sound at an extremely reasonable price. These features are what separate Panasonic apart from its competitors in very competitive field.

Panasonic TC-P46X3
Screen
This 46-inch plasma is a new option for 2011. It offers 720p Full-HD resolution and over 6,000 shades of gradation. The best selling point of Plasma TV is the superior picture. The TC-P46X3 offers Panasonic’s top-level plasma technology at a reasonable price.
For example, subfield drive is standard on the P46X3. Subfield drive is extremely rapid refresh of pixels between video frames. Instead of the sixty frames per second (that you have in North American markets) for video replay you get up to 600Hz.
Even more exciting is short-throw phosphoric technology on the TC-P46X3. Short-throw refers to quickly dimming the phosphors on the screen after illuminating them. The result is that sports, gaming and any fast action do not suffer from blur, image lag or ghosting. You get a crisp, clear picture even with high-speed action.
Cabinet
The TC-P46X3’s screen is framed in a dramatic glossy black bezel extending to the edge with a clean design and modular look that will serve you well whether in the dining room, kitchen, great room or guest bedroom.
Many competitors in the HDTV market have added clunky design features and extra badges and decals in an attempt to add “fashion appeal.” Panasonic has gone the other direction with the P46X3. It has removed unnecessary design elements resulting in a fresh, clean look that lets the picture shine.
Panasonic is committed to environmentally friendly manufacturing and products. The key is the Mercury and lead free plasma display. All Viera plasma displays panels are manufactured this way. This is an amazing accomplishment by Panasonic and will significantly reduce negative environmental impact in communities around the world when these TVs are recycled in favor of new models.
And you can expect long panel life: the TC-P46X3 will last up to one hundred thousand hours under normal use. That’s the equivalent of thirty years of watching eight hours a day! This is in part due to the redesigned phosphor and rear panel process.
Setup
The Panasonic TC-P46X3 comes standard with Viera Tools which provides one button access to a menu of explanations of button functions and TV features. By keeping the button pressed down, the information will stay on screen until you are satisfied, and then you can resume normal operation.
Panasonic spends a tremendous amount of money on consumer research. It is their commitment to improving the customer experience at all levels that leads to small improvements. For example, the easy removal carton that the P46X3 is shipped in–unlike competitors who ship the plasma in a box that is difficult to open, Panasonic prevents you from wasting time removing industrial staples, heavy packing tape, and metal strapping just to get to your TV.
For gamers the P46X3 offers Game Mode which will help to ensure fluid and seamless game play by minimizing time lag. Anti-image retention technology will prevent burn-in on the P46X3 providing you with long screen life and plenty of gaming fun.
We experimented with Game Mode with Disney’s racing game called “Split Second.” It features extremely fast cars and plenty of explosions. This crazy game allows you to change the track as you drive providing plenty of spills and thrills. The TC-P46X3 hummed along with clear images and spectacular color.
Picture
The real test of the TV is the picture. We played a copy of the “Walking Dead: The Complete First Season” blu-ray on the P46X3. What better way to test the TVs picture than a zombie apocalypse: police officer Rick Grimes awakes in a hospital room alone and returns to his house to find his family is gone. He slowly realizes the truth–the dead have risen and are on the hunt for him.
The unique color scheme of this series is actually a very good indicator of the color capabilities of the P46X3. Many scenes are grayish or varying shades of black. It clearly demonstrates the deep blacks and subtle gradations it is able to reproduce.
This is particularly difficult because this original series was not shot in HD video but on sixteen millimeter film. This helps provide it’s grisly, gritty feel and ominous tone. And because the TC-P46X3 offers 24p film speed, it is reproduced accurately and gives a real home theater experience.
Sound
The sound on the TC-P46X3 comes through loud and clear on the “Walking Dead” series. The episodes are action-packed and contain plenty of bombastic sounds: blaring car alarms, gun shots, and police sirens. You have to expect when you’re battling zombies you are going to make some noise. At one point tanks are called in to join the fray–the speakers faithfully reproduce the sound of this heavy armament.
The speakers have 2 channels/20 Watt digital surround sound. Some customers will opt to connect their big-screen HDTV to a stereo speaker system or home entertainment theater system. However if you just want to “plug and play” you’ll find the native Panasonic speakers to be more than adequate.
Energy
Panasonic has doubled their efforts to build environmentally friendly plasmas. The new models on average are 25% more efficient than the same models in the previous year. In addition, they meet and exceed Energy Star 4.0 standards. As we mentioned the panel display is free of both Mercury and lead–further evidence of Panasonic’s commitment to green friendly manufacturing.
Additional Features
One of the great features of the TC-P46X3 is extensibility through DLNA technology. If you have DLNA certified components you can connect them easily. You could watch movies or listen to music in any room in the house. By adding a optional Wi-Fi dongle you can expand your footprint and effectively use any of your DLNA components as far as the Wi-Fi signal reaches. For example, you could have a cup of coffee out on the back deck while watching a movie on your lap top that is wirelessly connected to the plasma in the living room.
The TC-P46X3 also includes IPTV technology. Simply press the Viera tools button and you’ll be able to get on line with Facebook, Twitter, Skype and Pandora. You can also access Netflix or CinemaNow to enjoy movies on demand.
We love the Viera Image Viewer feature- all you need to do is capture some photos and videos on your digital camera and save them to an SD card. From there you can pop the card into the SD clot on the P46X3 and instantly view them.
This would be cool at a birthday party at your house as an example. You can shoot video of the party and later everyone can gather round the TV and laugh again at all the fun. If you want, you can add fun frames to still photos and even make slideshows with background music. Your photos probably will never look better!
Conclusion
We watched a lot of zombies and speeding cars but got a real sense of the full, deep, rich color Panasonic has achieved with the TC-P46X3. The 46-inch size is both compact and versatile at the same time–it may turn out to be one of most popular Panasonics plasmas yet.
