The Viera TC-P50GT30 is thinner and sleeker than the last year’s model. It sports a clean black glossy bezel with rounded edge to finish. You will notice that the speakers are positioned at the bottom panel of the TV to give you more depth when gaming or watching movies. It will fit into any interior with ease.

This is a mid-size 3D HDTV in the GT30 series, 65” is the biggest in the family. It has 4 HDMI ports which is more than enough for your input sources like gaming consoles or Blu-ray player. You will still be able to connect your older playback sources with the available component inputs. Connecting to a tablet PC is also possible.

The screens on the Viera GT30 series are made mercury and lead free. It is about 25% more efficient than its predecessor, although still less efficient than an LCD.

Picture Quality

The new TC-P50GT30 is equipped with Infinite Black 2 that will yield richer and deeper blacks. This has been significantly improved from the previous model so that there is less limitation on viewing distances.

Improvements have been made in the filter systems of the GT30 screens. The filters more adequately black out ambient light so that it can display a much deeper black. The screen panels are also able to raise the luminous efficiency better. They both work together so that you can enjoy true, deep black even in bright surroundings.

To achieve clear, crisp picture quality, the TC-P50GT30 pushes pixels at an ultra-rate of 120 frames per second. It relies on the Active Shutter technology to flash images for both the left and right eye in 1920 x 1080 resolution. The Active Shutter glasses will help open and close each lens in sync with the alternating image so you’ll be able to 3D pictures with stunning realism and power.

Watching the New York Yankees will be a pleasure as you’ll actually be able to have your eye on the ball. Gone were the days of squinting! This is made possible by the Short-Throw Phosphors that are newly developed that makes fast-moving sequences sharp and clear.

Actual user review:
“The picture quality this TV puts out is crazy good. Colors are bright and vibrant without being over saturated and unrealistic. Blacks are inky black, and shadow detail is great as well. One of the reasons I bought the GT30 over the ST30 is the THX mode which gives really good out of the box picture without any aftermarket calibration. If you’re into tweaking the picture though, there are two professional picture modes that allow very in depth picture controls.

1080P Source Material with a high bitrate (such as blurays or Vudu HDX) look incredibly sharp and stunning, while not looking sharp to the point of unrealism as some LCD’s look. 720P sources look very good as well if a bit softer. 480i/p sources look alright. I only spent a few minutes watching SD and the experience was unexpectedly unimpressive. Motion on the GT30 looks very smooth and realistic without displaying the terrible “soap opera effect” that 120/240Hz LCD’s seem to suffer from. “ – C. Wilson (MI, USA)

Most conventional TVs comes with a 240Hz refresh rate, but the TC-P50GT30 offers you the maximum drive speed of 600Hz. It comes with a Game Mode that automatically detects games in operation to provide the best optical image to get super-fast response with no delay.

The Cinema Smoother is a feature that amateur 3D film-makers would appreciate. Since this technology analyzes picture data in both preceding and successive frames, jerky effects are greatly minimized. This also will minimizes the ‘Ghostings’ while viewing 3D motion picture.

The Viera TC-P50GT30 exhibits a good uniformity of plasma as well 2D/3D picture quality. You will be able to see this if you are watching “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. Mesmerized and sucked into the exotic story, the colors and details rendered will catapult you quicker than you can imagine.

The bright sunlight created incredible hues and the black levels are amazingly deep. The food was almost too realistic that makes you want to grab for a bite. There was an added element of depth created by the 3D effect. Cars and people were being blown at you out of the screen, making you want to dodge out of the way. The TC-P50GT30 presented a very seamless and realistic 3D and 2D experience. The THX certification ensures Pixar-level Perfection!

Sound Quality

The sounds and voices rendered by the dual speakers were crystal clear and were never overshadowed by background noise. All effects were perfect from the surround sound effects to the seagulls around the water or when the food go ‘splat!’ on the ground. For a more immersive sound experience you may want to consider integrating the TC-P50GT30 with the ZVOX 550HSD Incredibase system.

Conclusion

The VIERA TC-P50GT30 represents many features of a high-end model at a delicious price. Although there are only 5 picture settings (Vivid, Standard, Game, Cinema and Custom), it means that it is easy for configuration. Default setting for the THX mode (in2D/3D) is something to behold. Once again, Panasonic has set the bar high with deeper blacks, less ghosting and fastest drive system on the market. This is an excellent TV for plasma seekers who do not want to pay too much.

Actual User Reviews:
I’ve had this for only 24 hours, and I’m blown away by the picture on this fantastic TV. It far surpasses my expectations.
It’s true that Viera Cast is laggy and jerky. So far no firmware update (already at v 2.0), but I have to believe there will be an update soon to correct this obvious issue. Nevertheless, it doesn’t detract from my overall review. 5 STARS!
By the way, delivery was excellent and the crew set up everything.”

This tv is by far the best electronic investment I have made. I had to upgrade from a Sony sxrd that was going bad, and was solely concerned with a good 2d picture. I had seen CES previews of this set and had decided this was going to be my Panasonic option. My other option was the Samsung D7000 LED. I demoed the D7000 and was fairly impressed. After all it was light years better than what I currently owned. I ended up waiting for this TV to come out, especially since it was about $500 cheaper, however I never had a chance to see it in person. But i have to say that i am very happy i went with this over the D7000. The picture quality of this set is superb, with much more accurate colors than the Samsung.” – Zod (USA)
