Screen

Consumer Reports calls Panasonic “the market leader in plasma TVs.” The new The TC-P50X3 has great features like improved interactive functionality, better picture quality and excellent motion picture resolution. This is a great time to be in the market for a new plasma TV. Every year the blacks are darker, response time is faster and resolution is crisper. Panasonic prides itself on their ability to engineer deep, deep blacks. This year is no different–Neo Plasma brings a new Infinite Black Filter–a higher efficiency panel that generates the best black and white combination under brighter environments. With pre-discharge control technology you’ll get increased native contrast.

One of the challenges of high action movies, fast sports and gaming is keeping up with the screen refresh. If the screen won’t refresh fast enough, the image begins to show lag and blur. 600Hz Subfield Motion uses unique Panasonic image-analysis technology. It converts the motion in each scene into small dots, allowing them to be refreshed between frames. As a result you get no blur, lag or after effects.

One game we play a lot is NBA Live 10. This EA Sports game looks amazing, plays smooth and is a lot of fun on the P50X3. In the game, you can pick any number of arenas from all over the world. Whichever one you pick, there is significant background activity on screen with yelling crowds, giant video screens, flashing lights, etc. Combine that with the non-stop basketball action and you need a plasma TV that can keep up. The TC-P50X3 handles the job beautifully.

Cabinet

Panasonic received the International CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award for their Plasma TV designs. You can see it in the TC-50X3 with its beautiful stone black bezel. “CleanTouch” keeps the bezel looking sharp due to a new smudge-resistant finish. If the cabinet becomes dirty, just wipe it with a soft dry cloth.

Set up

With the myriad of features and technologies in the TC-P50X3, one could get lost on what to do next. Viera Tools makes it easy to pull up helpful information on screen. With the press of one function button, you’ll get full explanations to get you where you need to go. As long as you keep the Viera Tools function button pressed down, the information stays up until you are ready to move on.

Picture

Viewing Blu-ray movies like Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” is a treat. Certainly Burtons’ color palette is unique, especially in titles such as “Alice” that blend live action and animation.
Within that context, we found the colors crisp and vibrant. The Queen of Hearts sets new records for pounds of make-up per inch but her scary red hair and blue make-up displayed faithfully on the P50X3. Scenes with a lot of movement, like a teacup moving out toward the audience, or brighter scenes like in the garden, both report accurately on-screen, the blacks never getting murky and dull.

Sound

Alice in Wonderland was recorded in pure 5.1 lossless soundtrack, meaning no sound was compresssed or filtered, so the speakers on the TC-P50X3 must reproduce accurately or they will get overwhelmed. The soundtrack not only has a bombastic score spread pumping through the main channel with parts spread to back channels, there are a lot of sound effects for a “classic” children’s tale.

Whether it be singing birds or growling creatures, the P50X3 is up to the task. Panasonic continues their THX certification, the prestigious company founded by filmmaker George Lucas. Along with the beautiful visuals, the lush and rich soundscapes put you in Alice’s world right there with Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Energy

Your TC-P50X3 is ecologically friendly–the one hundred thousand hour lifespan keeps it on the job and out of landfills. In addition, Panasonic made it a goal to eliminate any lead or mercury in the panels. There are additional advances like new and improved phosphoric mixtures and more efficient electronics.

Additional Features and Connections

In the past Panasonic used a proprietary closed interactive TV function. They threw that approach out in favor of a new philosophy called Viera Connect. The new function includes interactive sites like Netflix, Amazon VOD, Pandora, Twitter, a Bloomberg News Channel, and Skype. But hold the phone, that’s not all. With Viera Connect, you also get cool apps such as CinemaNow, Hulu Plus, Napster, Facebook, and sports sites like Major League Baseball TV, Major League Soccer Matchday, Live NBA Gametime, and NHL Game Center.

The open systems approach continues with innovations like allowing you to connect with the Viera interface through your smartphone. You can even get a Skype camera! Now you can communicate with your pals through the giant TV rather than a tiny computer or smart phone screen.

The TC-P50X3 also comes with Viera Link which allows you connect all compatible components using only the remote. You can control the TV itself, Blu-ray DVD players, home theaters, even network cameras. You can use this as a security feature–monitor your home or nursery. You can watch your property away from the home by installing a camera and connecting it to the P50X3 with a regular Ethernet cable.

The TC-P50X3 includes native DLNA connections to hook up easily to other DLNA equipped components. You can also set up DLNA compatible AV equipment and use the Viera Wi-Fi capability to send movies, music and photos to any media player. Play your digital music through your entire home! How impressed will your house guests be now?

The Viera Image Viewer lets you stick a flash thumb drive in a USB port and instantly see you photos and digital movies. Imagine coming in the door from a graduation, little league game or family picnic and immediately seeing your photos on the big screen. You could also use an SD memory card in the SD card slot or connected to any component with DLNA compatibility. You can make slide shows, add cool frames, background music and more.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to love about the Panasonic TC-P50X3. The 50-inch form factor has a lot of versatility – it is large enough to give a true big-screen viewing experience but small enough to fit in a lot of viewing areas. Research shows the average house size has reduced in recent years so that follows well.

But it is really Panasonic’s reputation for clear, accurate, vibrant color that put it at the top of HDTV lists. Add in so many extras native to the Viera brand at such a low price and you can see Panasonic has another winner on its hands.
