The Touch of Color (TOC) high-glossy finish on the outside of the Samsung LN52A860 gives the frame a rather stylish appearance even before seeing what the actual picture quality is like, or the intuitive on-screen menu that offers plenty in the way of personalizing the set’s display.

For even more precise viewing and customization, there are eight more settings that can be changed called Detailed Picture Settings. Here, you can change the amount of pink color in flesh tones, or select the White Balance option and adjust the overall color temperature, or adjust the Dynamic Contrast, choosing from either off, low, medium, or high.

The Gamma setting affects the intensity of the three primary colors, red, blue, and green, and the Color Space setting can be adjusted from one of three options, auto, native, or custom, and the Edge Enhancement allows you to emphasize the edges and boundaries of objects for sharp detail.

For superior TV viewing, the LN52A860 features Samsung’s Auto Motion Plus 120Hz anti-blur technology for clearer motion as well as a four millisecond pixel response time, meaning that the picture will never become blurry even in the most fast paced scenes, making it perfect for viewing sports.

In terms of sound, the audio qualities of the Samsung LN52A860 are just as high tech as its image properties with the patented technology known as SRS TruSurround XT. It is an innovative sound system that uses only two speakers but is able to play 5.1 multi channel source content to re-create the surround sound experience without addtional speakers.

You can also choose from five different sound settings, Standard, the factory setting, Custom, which will instantly recall your personal equalizer settings, Movie, for viewing movies, obviously, Music for making the music louder than the vocals, and Speech, which makes the spoken word louder than the other sounds being played.

While this model by Samsung is wall mountable, the mounting brackets needed to do so are not included with purchase, although it does come with a detachable swivel stand as well as an illuminated, universal remote control and yet another secondary TOC remote.

The Samsung LN52A860 model is Energy Star compliant and meets the guidelines in place by the U.S. government, and the set is covered by Samsung’s 18 month parts and labor warranty for either in-home service or in-store pick-up.

While I was a bit apprehensive about the set up process of a TV with so many different features and capabilities, I have to say that it was on and working as expected within minutes of opening the box. And shortly after that, we had all of our extras fully connected as well like the video game system and DVD player.

Speaking of extras, this particular model comes with Wiselink Pro and two USB 2.0 ports located on the set’s side panel, allowing you to attach any USB storage device to the TV for everything from viewing pictures, to playing MP3 files, to saving lists of movies and personalized playback options, all of which is ideal if like most families, you’ve begun to store all of your favorite pictures on your computer’s hard drive.

There are six different picture sizes to choose from on the Samsung LN52A860, including the 16:9 wide mode aspect ratio, Zooms one and two, Wide Fit, 4:3, and the Just Scan setting that provides the full image in HD mode. The three Picture Presets, Dynamic for viewing in brightly lit rooms, Movie for dimly lit areas, and Standard, which are the factory settings, may be further fine tuned by adjusting the backlight, brightness, color, sharpness, and tint of each of the presets, which the set will conveniently remember and store for next time.
