Samsung hits another one out of the park with the PN50C680, a 50-inch plasma with 1080p FullHD (1920×1080 resolution) and 2,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio. It has many features that make it a great choice for your next TV.

Screen

No, you are not dreaming. For a very attractive price, the Samsung PN50C680 gives you full 1080p. It has great picture quality with deep blacks and rich color. Wide Color Enhancer maximizes color composition and widens the dynamic color range for rich reds, sunny yellows and deep blues. The 50C680’s Ultra Clear Panel makes colors bolder, heightens contrast, and reduces reflection for ideal viewing in any spot in the room.

For gaming and fast action sports, you need a screen like the 50C680’s that keeps up the pace. 600Hz Subfield Motion refreshes pixels within frame. Whether you are going for the club championship on Tiger Woods Golf, or watching your favorite sports team, the picture is sharp and free of blur or fading. The PN50C680’s impressive 2,000,000:1 Mega Contrast Ratio (the range between the bright whites and dark black in the screen’s color spectrum) provides enhanced picture clarity.

Cabinet

The PN50C680 features Samsung’s Ultra Slim Design, a thin and elegant profile that flatters any room. It is lightweight and swivels easily on the stand to adjust for any group size. You can choose the optional Touch of Color treatment which adds subtle accents to the black bezel, further adding to the 50C680’s modern, designer look.

Setup and Performance

To connect the wireless network, put the Linkstick in after powering up the TV. A series of menus will walk you through set-up. In the case of a wired network, connect an Ethernet cable from router or modem to the LAN port on the PN50C680. You may need to use a LAN adapter due to the TV’s thin profile.

For the 3D glasses we recommend purchasing the rechargeable version–the non-rechargeable glasses last 50-70 hours depending on usage. If you have prescription eyeglasses, the 3D glasses should fir over the top comfortably. Clean the 3-D glasses by working on one lens at a time with a soft lean micro-fiber cloth. 3D glasses are made up of two screens in each lens, so don’t squeeze the lens together.

PN50C680 Gamer Mode works excellent. The last thing you want as a gamer is any lag in controller response and on-screen action.

3D

The 50C680 is fun because it is “3D enabled,” meaning it will convert any 2D images into 3D. You need your spiffy Samsung 3D active glasses to see it in action. All you do is push one button and, shazam, you are watching sports, game shows, or any 2D content in PN50C680 3D glory.

Normal 3D is even more impressive. Samsung’s exclusive BD Wise technology automatically adjusts the PN50C680’s resolution for the best Blu-ray DVD viewing. To test it out we played a 3D version of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, which ships in 1080p, perfect for the PN50C680.

In the film, Flint Lockwood invents a machine that can turn food into water. As you can imagine, things go awry, and eventually food is raining from the sky. On the beautiful screen of the PN50C680, it really is funny to see giant spaghetti dropping on a car. At one point Flint is bouncing on a giant jello mold like a trampoline. You really get a sense of the tremendous color depth of the PN50C680 due to the multiple shades of similar color necessary to maintain the illusion of the jello, especially with people bouncing on it.

When a falling pancake covers a building and then butter lands on the pancake, you’ll want to get up from watching the PN50C680 to cook up some food! It’s a great 3-D Blu-ray transfer especially because it is presented in the film’s original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Sound

As impressive as “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” is on screen, the PN50C680′s audio meets the challenge as well. The SRS Tru Surround HD Sound Effects System gets a workout as the food drops from the sky and the town goes crazy. In the jello scenes, Flint’s bouncing (and flopping) is accompanied by bass that resonates through the 50C680 with oomph and punch.

The PN50C650 has 10 Watts of Sound pumping over 2 channels. Auto Volume Leveler puts a loudness limit on commercials to keep them more in line with the sound level of the programs. If you’ve ever jumped out of your chair when a loud commercial pops on the screen right after a quiet movie scene, you’ll enjoy this feature of the 50C680.

Energy

Samsung has worked hard on the energy efficiency of the PN50C680. The current model is operating at up to 26% more efficient than the same models one year ago. But that’s not all—the PN50C680 meets and exceed ENERGY STAR 4.0 standards. This is great for the environment and promoting green living.

Accessories and Connections

ConnectShare Movie allows you to plug your camcorder or mp3 player directly into the PN50C680 and immediately enjoy your home movies or music collection. Game Mode accelerates sound and image processing and optimizes darker areas of the screen to reduce lag, minimize blur and create awesome game playing experiences.

Anynet+ (HDMI) lets you use the PN50C680 remote to control all the devices in your entire entertainment system. The PN50C680 has Wireless LAN Adapter Support – with the correct adapter you can share files, folders and even printers (or any DLNA complaint device). You can also use it to download firmware updates. However, you cannot use it to access streaming apps like Youtube or Netflix as Samsung Apps are not available on the PNC50680. The adapter, which looks like flash drive, is sold separately.

PN50C680 Connections include 4 HDMI Ports, 2 Component ports, 2 Composite AV Ports for analog signals, and a PC input transmitting VGA signals. Additional ports on the 50C680 include a DVI input for media players, a PC Audio Input Mini-Jack for delivering sound from a computer, the aforementioned Ethernet LAN port, and 2 USB slots.

Conclusion

The Samsung PN50C680 is another great example of Samsung’s total focus on picture quality at reasonable prices. Rarely will you find 1080p resolution and 600Hz Subfield Motion at this price point. Add on TruSurround Sound and 3D ready technology, great design and easy set-up the PN50C680 is a great choice.
