The Samsung PN59D6500 is a full 1080p high definition Plasma Panel with selectable 3D capability and lots of Internet apps to keep you entertained. Marketed by Samsung as a Plasma +1 for 2011, it has a reduced bezel design adding an inch of screen display all the way around. The focus is on the picture in this model and not on the cabinet. From Samsung’s Smart TV line, the PN59D6500 ships with their Smart Hub feature to centralize your video, audio and application selections. With multiple 3D settings this set can convert any video device’s 2D output to 3D for a totally new viewing experience. The 5,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio produces sharp colors and contrast. That full 59 inch (diagonal) screen running a 600Hz Subfield HD Motion for clearer video motion produces sharp 2D and 3D video imaging. The Samsung 6500 series introduces configurable 2D to 3D conversion capabilities allowing you to watch any video output in 3D. Movies are delivered with cinema-like sharp quality whether in 2D or 3D. Cinema Smooth technology automatically controls the letterbox lighting by turning off the lights at the top & bottom of the screen. One disappointment is that you have to buy the Samsung 3D Active shutter glasses separately. In would have been a nice perk to have a pair included. Take note, too, the 2010 Samsung IR 3D glasses and 3D glasses from other manufacturers are not compatible with this model. Do you experience times when your broadcast signal is weak and images are scattered or show ghosting? During these times the Digital Noise Reduction feature can be manually activated to reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Sound

The PN59D6500’s hidden twin 15-watt speakers use SRS TheaterSound to enhance their output for different sound modes like standard, music and movie. The Samsung PN59D6500 also ships with the company’s auto volume leveler application to eliminate sound spikes during program interruptions like commercials and announcements. That is a welcome technological improvement.

Internet Applications

Samsung Apps offers the largest variety of Internet applications currently available in the HDTV market. The Samsung PN59D6500 can be connected to your home network wirelessly with its internal 802.11n class transmitter giving you access to your networked digital movies, music and Internet streaming entertainment. The large 59 inch screen is framed by a one inch black cabinet with a slight amber tint that creates the impression of a larger picture with less surrounding frame. It will sit nearly 14 inches deep when using the included stand. At nearly 68 pounds without a stand and 54.3 inches wide, the Samsung PN59D6500 is going to need at least two people to properly lift into on a wall mount.

Set-Up

With the included quick start guide and remote you can have the Samsung PN59D6500 configured and operational in minutes. After the channel scan programming, you can start at the Smart Hub feature for all your entertainment choices. Whether you are mounting the TV on the wall or on its included stand, you are going to need help lifting and steadying the unit. At nearly 70 lbs it’s possible to lift the monitor, but the width makes it too unwieldy for a single person to lift, center it on the wall or stand and settle it in place without additional help. You’ll also need to add a 3D capable HDMI cable for digital transfer of the picture and sound. Another nice feature is the anti Burn-in technology. If you have an older set and notice there are shadows of images ‘burnt in’ the screen you’ll appreciate this solution. If the screen it idle for a specific period of time, an automatic screensaver is engaged. Also, pixel shift is a function used to move the pixel display every few minutes to prevent burn-in.

Connections

All connections are made on the rear of the panel for the PN59D6500.
