While the 3D content for HDTVs is just starting to build, the Samsung PN64D7000 ships with 2D to 3D conversion technology so you can virtually watch any content in 3D. You will have to invest in a pair of Bluetooth connected Samsung 3D Active shutter glasses since none ship with the set. No other 3D glasses will work with this set, so don’t make the mistake of purchasing an off brand. The 15,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio produces sharp colors and contrast. That full 64 inch (diagonal) screen is powered by both a 600Hz Subfield HD Motion function for clearer video motion and a Real Black Filter for higher picture contrast and deeper black levels for sharp viewing. Viewing the screen from an angle, whether in 2D or 3D, is excellent. You don’t have to sit directly in front of the TV to enjoy vivid, yet realistic color and contrast. We did not notice any artifacts or ghosting in 2D or 3D.

Sound

The PN64D7000’s two 15-watt speakers use SRS TheaterSound for virtual surround sound. The SRS TruDialog function allows you to increase voice audio over background music or sound effects to hear the spoken word clearly. Having experienced muffled audio on older Samsung TVs, this is a welcome feature. Now you can adjust the audio to override background noise to better hear the dialog. An Audio Delay function is included as well to correct audio/video mismatch, when watching TV or video, and listening to a digital audio output using an external device. The delay is adjustable from 0ms to 250ms.

Internet Applications

The Samsung PN64D7000, with either a wired or wireless connection to your home network provides access to your networked media and Internet streaming entertainment. For Internet Apps, Samsung provides the most variety of any HDTV manufacturers. Their portal is the Smart Hub. Samsung’s Smart Hub feature lets you launch any application, video or audio feature from its centralized screen. The search feature is not very robust and we found the interface to be a bit confusing. The main differences between this model and Samsung’s PND8000 are that this model does not offer a QWERTY keyboard remote or a Web browser. The Samsung 7000 class of HDTVs offers Picture-in Picture functionality as well for maximum entertainment. Using Samsung’s free Social TV app you can chat or provide real time updates to your friends over Twitter, Facebook or Google Talk while watching your show.

Cabinet

The PN64D7000 is 1.75 inches thick when wall mounted. The large 64 inch screen is part of Samsung’s Plasma +1 design, it has a reduced bezel and that actually adds an inch of screen display all the way around. It will sit a little over 13 inches deep when using the included swivel stand. You will need help from a friend to properly fit this set on a wall mount since it weighs in at nearly 77 pounds without a stand and is 58.5 inches wide. The charcoal brushed metal with glass bezel make this a sharp looking set. However, if you have other components and need a sharp looking entertainment unit, then consider buying the Walker Edison 60-inch Cayenne TV Stand in black lacquer with black glass top and shelves. This provides an elegant look with plenty of room for your other electronic essentials. Once you have the TV mounted on the stand’s rear pedestal it appears to ‘float’ above shelving. However, if you don’t need new shelving the swivel stand included with the PN64D7000 is most acceptable.

Set-Up

The onscreen setup instructions are quick and easy to follow with the included remote control. Start at the Smart Hub to examine or try all the features Samsung has packed into this HDTV. Consumers who love to use their iPhone or iPad to do everything should get Samsung’s TV Remote app which includes a keyboard. This makes entering login information much easier for the Smart Hub apps. One ‘gotcha’ is that if you plan on using external speakers, you’ll need an optical ‘toslink’ cable to get the sound to your receiver for the Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, other Smart Hub apps. Be sure to measure the distance between connection points so you purchase the appropriate length cable.

Connections

All connections are on the rear left of the panel for the PN64D7000 and are easily reached. They include four HDMI inputs for your HD capable video components, an over the air HDTV antenna RF connector and a single component video connection that can be switched between composite or component video input. There is also computer monitor connection; Ethernet jack and a digital audio optical connection available. Three USB ports are included to connect your digital media players and thumb drives to instantly play mpeg video, jpg images or mp3 formatted audio.
