Samsung UN40B6000

LED televisions are another new idea to hit the shops and the Samsung UN40B6000 is no exception. The LED refers to the way that the screen is lit. Previously the LCD screens were lit with a fluorescent tube, and now all leading manufacturers are offering a range of televisions lit with LED lights instead. To be honest it is a bit of a marketing ploy and in truth there is little difference in performance normally, but the key issue that they hope to resolve is how the television displays black colors. Some older florescent tube lit models can dull the black display, but for lots of people this doesn’t impact enough on their viewing experience for them to want to rush out and get a LED, so is this new Samsung just a marketing ploy or are we impressed with the performance, as this is an expensive piece of kit if the only benefit on offer is the LED technology.

Design

This is a smaller end television set with a 40 inch screen, which is certainly big enough for most home lounge areas but doesn’t quite get into the home cinema sizing that is becoming increasingly popular. We have to say we were impressed with the depth of this unit. It is amazingly slim and really not that heavy. It is just 1.2 inches deep and it really is stunning looking. Even with the stand that comes in the box this really does not require a lot of space and looks great and as the Samsung UN40B6000 is so thin and light wall mounting is not a problem. The only thing to remember is that the wall mounting kit is not sold as part of the box price and will need to be purchased separately. Please follow wall-mounting instructions carefully or get a professional in, as this is a very expensive piece of kit and will be badly damaged if it falls off the wall, or worse hurt someone if it lands on them. Looks wise, this is standard Samsung stuff so you know it looks good. The frame is about an inch wide and frames the screen nicely. The front is clean and free of connectors and this really will add a touch of class to your room.

Key Features

As we mentioned, the LED functionality of this LCD high definition television means that any issues with black depth are resolved. In non technical terms this means that where there is a big area of black in a film, for example a scene in the shadows, the black colors and shadings are all definable. You can see details such as walls and staircases, which is a good thing and works well on the Samsung UN40B6000. What you don’t want to see is an area of washed out grayscale that lacks clarity and detail. In terms of the rest of the colors we were equally impressed. All the colors seemed very true to life with good brightness and contrast, and the whites were crisp and bright as well.

In terms of connectivity this has 4 HDMI connectors, which is usually more than enough for most home set ups and allows you to connect things like your AV receiver, your DVD player and perhaps a games console, as this television also features gaming mode which is another good inclusion for those who enjoy their gaming fun. This is as we would expect a 1080p display and to be honest is not much better than other lower priced Samsungs. We aren’t noticing the LED making that much difference. Yes, we did say the picture quality is outstanding but other leading players have achieved this with their technologies and have not just used the LED as the main selling point or over inflated the prices as much as this range from Samsung, considering that this is only a 120Hz not a 240Hz screen which at the end of the day is level entry low end technology.

Conclusion

We do like the fact that this is a LAN capable television that can also be connected easily to the laptop or PC, and there is a definite Samsung mark of quality on this set. However, for a small screen size we just cannot get our head around the massive price tag. This is a case of being torn with our view. We love the ultra thin screen, and the fact that it is wall mountable, so for that reason we wouldn’t rule it out, but we do have to question whether this is enough to justify the massive price tag. We can’t help wondering if Samsung themselves are going to realize the error of their ways and be forced to bring the price down to make this a serious competitor in its field.
