Samsung UN46B8000

There is a sudden wave of LED television sets being released from all manufacturers and the Samsung UN46B8000 is no exception. This latest set features a 46 inch screen and comes with a more realistic price tag than some others in the Samsung LED range which is excellent, as they were looking like a company that had lost touch with its consumer base. On first glance this offering really looks to be a promising piece of kit, so we were very excited when it arrived in the offices. However, did our tests agree that this is simply stunning or were we left somewhat disappointed with the overall performance?

Design

This is classic Samsung styling and because of that it does look good – we are just completely in love with their new ultra slim technology, which means the Samsung UN46B8000 is just 1.2 inches deep. This works really well and gives an excellent look that really cannot be beaten in terms of something you have to see and look at everyday. They sensibly keep the front of the frame clear of connectors with all of that happening around the back, and the standing foot that comes in the box is also good looking and compact, meaning that standing this television on the side is a breeze. The supporting column of the stand is clear, and this combines with the lower blue lighting that comes out of the set to give a lovely reflection and glow. The optional wall mounting kit is available should you want to wall mount you television set; however, we were more than happy with the way it looked standing on the side of our mock up lounge.

Key Features

This is an LED television which means that it uses LED lights to provide the internal lighting rather than the more standard florescent tube. This technology is likely to become the norm for most manufacturers as it does give better picture colorings. The Samsung UN46B8000 is a 1080p set with a superior 240 Hz display which we are really pleased to see as the 120Hz really isn’t as good. This is one of the sets that Samsung boast is also environmentally friendly, which means the set has been made without any mercury and uses up to 40% less power that other comparable LCD television screens – which is a plus for the carbon footprint conscious amongst us.

In terms of picture quality we were impressed with the colors on offer, with green trees and blue sky all providing true to life pictures on the reasonably sized 46 inch television screen, and the inclusion of the LED lighting means that the black depths are excellent with real clarity in shadows and wash day bright whites perfect the overall images on view. The ideal viewing distance for this screen is about 10 to 12 feet away, so this needs to be taken into account when choosing your television set. Otherwise, you will not be getting the best in terms of performance meaning you will not fall in love with this television like we are beginning to.

One of the things we really love about the Samsung UN46B8000 is that it features Internet@TV which integrates with other sites like Yahoo and Flickr and means you can get internet content on the television set. Obviously you have to use the LAN port and connect the television to the broadband connection in your home, but it is a nice touch and we really enjoyed exploring this feature.

The screen has also got built in anti glare technology, which means that in a light room there is less interference from reflections such as windows and lights, making the picture remain more steady and you don’t find yourself trying to concentrate on the image and see past the reflections. Oh, and though it really isn’t a deciding factor we just feel we have to mention their pebble shaped remote control as we love this idea. It beats the normal stick shaped remotes and works well in terms of ergonomics.

Conclusion

This is a lovely set that really looks the part and certainly doesn’t lack in performance quality either, and we had a lot of fun testing it. We were happy with all the media we tested, from our favorite Blu-ray DVD to the computer content when we hooked up the laptop. The picture quality was first rate and lacked very little. The Samsung UN46B8000 gets thumbs up from us as we feel that it has been realistically priced in terms of what’s on offer.
