A 46-inch 1080p 120Hz 3D LED HDTV, the Samsung UN46D6400 comes with AutoMotion Plus and Clear Motion Rate. Are you a sports fan? High speed sports like football and hockey are no problem thanks to the frame by frame smoothing motion of the AutoMotion Plus. This exciting technology, exclusive to Samsung, estimates what an image would look like between frames and inserts that data. The result is a super crisp picture with no blur to speak of and smooth, life-like imagery.

And that’s not all. Ultra Clear Panel absorbs ambient light which helps to reduce reflections on the glass. It boosts contrast ratio and enhances natural skin tones and shadow detail.

Cabinet

The UN46D6400’s beautiful frame has a very small bezel with less than 1 inch separating the screen from the outside of the frame. On the extreme outside of the frame is a transparent edge, further adding to its light, airy feel.

You also get the elegant Touch of Color design feature which adds subtle amber color accents along the jet-black bezel, creating a stylistic touch that is modern and traditional at the same time. The glass stem stand is equally luxurious looking; at times the D6400 appears to float in the air.

Set-Up

Samsung’s suggested set-up for Samsung UN46D6400 is to remove the stand and wall mount from the box—then attach the stand while the TV is still in the box—just set the stand down and slide it out of the box. This might actually work better for a bigger TV. The 46-inch format is not as cumbersome as some of the 55-inch models. If wall mounting the UN46D6400, make sure to use washers to avoid turning screws too hard into the back.

Setting up the picture is easy with Samsung UN46D6400 auto controls—you can choose from standard, dynamic, natural and movie mode. Movie mode includes a warm2 selection that softens skin tones and brown tones. Within each mode you can adjust sharpness, hue, brightness, color, backlight and contrast. Overall you get to play with a 10-point color temperature system as well as 10-point color management system

“Resident Evil- Afterlife 3D” seemed like a fun way to test the 3D capabilities of the Samsung UN46D6400 in action. This is the fourth edition of the live action series. While not as crazy as the games the movies are based on, seeing Millo Jovovich take on a huge posse of zombie killers is always a lot of fun.

The movie seems to veer from bright white scenes to moody, dark ones rapidly—it provides you a chance to see the deep, lush blacks and the bright whites of the UN46D6400. The action scenes make the Matrix look like a slow motion movie—blur and banding was non-existent and the high action looked crisp and clear.

The 3D rendering is excellent. There are scattered bursts of ghosting during some scenes but it is almost indetectable. Samsung has knocked down the price on the Active Shutter Glasses (you them need for 3D viewing) by almost 65%. You may even want to pick up a couple extra in case your dog uses one as a play toy.

Sound

The sound engineers did a great job on the lossless soundtrack. The sound is aggressive and exciting as you would expect for a movie in this genre—but it never overwhelms or distorts. The upper frequencies perform admirably, never getting too thin or raspy. There is a lot of side to side panning as well as back-to-front movement through the soundstage. It all came through nice and clean due to the Samsung UN46D6400’s SRS TheaterSound, a system designed to moderate volume levels and enhance areas of less than optimal sound in the score.

The two speakers are rear-facing with 10watts of power and Dolby Digital Plus enhancing the Multi-Channel Sound (MTS). At times rear facing speakers can sound muddled. One trick is to make sure the UN46D6400 is not so close to the wall that the sound doesn’t get a chance to reflect properly.

That said, many HDTV fans are audiophiles with extensive movie and music collections. This consumer will more than likely opt for external sound systems. A good choice is the ZVOX family of compact soundbars and home entertainment systems. One of the most popular models is the ZVOX550 which takes ease of installation to a new level.

Additional Features

The Samsung UN46D6400 has a boatload of additional features including the exciting new Smart Hub, a cool menu system for selecting movies, videos and TV shows from online services (and even connected devices). You can also call up a bunch of apps from Samsung Apps like Netflix movies, Hulu TV, YouTube, ESPN, Pandora music, Facebook, Twitter and more—all available just 35 feet from your favorite beer in the fridge and that roast beef sandwich you’ve been saving for the big game.

With its LED backlit technology, the D6400 benefits from low energy consumption.
