Samsung UN55B8000

Samsung have made some impressive television sets so when we received the Samsung UN55B8000 to test we were actually quite excited – a bit like a group of kids with a bag of mystery candy. What were we going to find when we opened the box? And, a rather large box it is too, as this is a 55-inch set and requires a rather large space or it could end up over dominating a room and not giving the effect you had hoped for. So have Samsung released a winner, or is this just a very expensive piece of kit that you are going to wish you hadn’t spent the money on? We share our findings below so you can decide for yourself, and we just had to go and get candy to eat while we worked because someone decided to mention it and now we all want it so maybe you need to go get some to eat as you read!

Design

Wow was a common word that was heard as we unpacked this set and feasted our eyes on this massive television for the first time. Wow, this is a seriously thin set which funnily enough is one of the selling points for Samsung, and is a very skinny 1.2 inches deep, which gave rise to our second Wow, as the Samsung UN55B8000 is also incredibly light and means that unusually for a LCD screen – that’s right, you guessed it – you can wall mount this baby. Again, Wow, although this is seen as optional by Samsung so it is the standing base that is included in the box and not the wall mounting kit, meaning you would have to buy that as an extra, but hey, we are not sure we would mind. Putting our very serious head on for a moment – we try not to use it too often, but in this case we feel we need to just to say this – wall mounting a television of such a size needs to be done by a professional as there have been just too many cases of people, more specifically little children, being seriously injured by wall mounted televisions falling from the wall, so please be careful.

Right, very serious head back on the shelf, and review head firmly back on, we took a strange stone shaped object out of the box, and scratched our heads a bit wondering why on earth they sent us a pebble, and then realized that this is their new remote control – funky! Easy to use and we like it – although getting it to that lovely wooden remote control holder Great Aunt Joan brought you last Christmas could be a challenge. To sum up, we have to say this is an incredibly sleek piece of kit. The back light is excellent and the frame is just perfection, so for one last time, our overall impression of the looks on offer with the Samsung UN55B8000? Yep, you guessed it – Wow!

The picture is truly amazing, as sharp and awesome as I have ever seen on any set anywhere. This new LED/LCD is the most incredible picture I have ever seen. Key Features

There are just loads of features crammed in, and with the television being so thin we wonder how they managed it! The picture quality is almost perfection, the colors are excellent, and unlike some high definition television sets we have tested there isn’t an issue with black depth, as we found that the levels of black were excellent and there was no loss of picture when looking into shadows. We could still see all the details that were intended to be there. Due to the 55-inch size of this screen you do really need to be 15 foot away from it to get the best possible viewing experience. Again, something to consider when choosing a set, as although you may have the wall space or the standing space, if you cannot get 15 foot back from it you really will miss out on performance. There are plenty of connectivity options with the Samsung UN55B8000, and again it is somewhat impressive that they still managed to get so many into such a thin shell. However, there are 4 HDMI slots making connecting your AV receiver, DVD player or games console a breeze, a PC slot to connect the computer, allowing you to view the laptop screen via the big screen, a LAN Cat 5 slot, which basically means you can wire this television into the broadband of your home to give added functionality, and finally 2 USB slots and a component video.

Conclusion

This was a really easy review to conclude. We love it. That’s it – the review itself says the rest. Yes, it is fantastic, and yes, space and money allowing we would definitely be buying it.

• “So I did a lot of research on LED tv’s. Samsung by far is the best LED tv out there right now. Don’t be fooled and get another brand as Toshiba, LG, Sony, none of them can match the quality of the Samsung UN55B8000 model. Once you tune the tv, all I could say was wow! Watching HD channels and blu ray is unbelievable. The thickness and weight is something you have to see to believe. 1.2″ and 51lbs for a 55″ screen?? Unreal! The only thing that you have to be wary of is that you do need to get used to the colors and motion. Basically everything that is HD looks like it is 3D. The characters pop almost like you are watching 3D. There are instances where everything is so crisp and clear that it looks to be in slow motion. This can be adjusted with the right setting. Funny though that if you look carefully, because the picture is so clear and crisp, you can actually tell everything is fake, as if you were on the set of the movie you are watching and you can tell all the plastic fake props on set!” – G.Chen (USA)
• “Great LED TV, was looking for months at the Samsung, LG, and Sharp LED TVs and the Samsung had the best picture by far. I went with the 8000 model because the blacks are deeper and the picture popped more than the 6000 or 7000 models. All of the negatives you read about searchlights and uneven backlight I am not noticing on my set at all. The picture is nothing short of amazing. Great TV set, makes my Sony 50 inch XBR look horrible! If you are looking at this there is nothing that should stop your from buying, apply the latest firmware from Samsung and this set rocks!
