Samsung UN55C8000

Most top manufacturers of HDTVs are busy implementing 3-D technologies to their TVs to add a whole new perspective of multimedia entertainment right from the home. Not everyone likes the whole idea of a 3-D experience and the technology does not cost cheap either with some 3-D models costing nearly twice as much as ordinary LCD counterparts of the same size. However, that will not stop manufacturers like Samsung that try to make every aspect of the TV worth its value. The new Samsung UN55C8000 is one of the new Samsung 3D models that try to slim down on price without giving up too much.

Technical Features

Externally, does not look much different than last year’s LED models, but that is not a bad thing since it sports a slim and modern finished with brushed titanium and supported by a stable swivel stand. The Touch of Color takes away the red and replaces it with charcoal which may look better for some people that found the red color to be out of place.

Samsung successfully combines 3-D entertainment with brilliant image quality because of its LED nature. While it is pricier than 3-D LCD TVs, the 8,000,000:1 Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio really makes a difference especially when dealing with deep blacks.

Like other 2010 models, Samsung took the environment very seriously by not only meeting the Energy Star 4.0 minimum requirements, but exceeding it as well. This is an impressive feat for a 3-D TV and really makes this model a must have considering the high price tag. It should be around 50% less consuming than older Samsung models which means huge savings on the electric bill even if used frequently.

Technologies

Samsung uses a new innovative technology called Precision Dimming which contributes greatly to the overall performance of the TV even if the 3-D features are not being used. It is responsible for the high dynamic range and the deep blacks and pristine whites. It also provides a good boost to the Wide Color Enhancer Plus which still exists by making colors purer and more natural. Since the Samsung UN55C8000 uses the Ultra Clear Panel design that other LED TVs use, skin tones and shadows are reproduced naturally and some of the finer details are nicely preserved. Gamers can also enjoy some enhancements in image and sound quality by activating the Game Mode feature which enhances some of the dark areas.

Samsung also offers the latest onscreen motion technology which is the 240 Hz Clear Motion Rate. Ordinary viewers may not see much of a difference especially if they are used to the 120 Hz, but high-speed action scenes do not produce any blur at all.

“I almost went with a plasma and ended up getting the UN55C8000. I am so glad I did. As far as a display of 2D it dominates most plasmas on the market with equal picture quality and no downsides like burn-ins, fading black levels… Some people think it has some clouding and flashlighting but from my experience this is really low. 3D is just as good as the Panasonics. They use the same technology the difference is because its plasma you can turn your head sideways to watch in 3D. With the glasses running $150 I don’t think you should be lying down with them anyways. Plus the Samsung does 2D to 3D conversion that actually looks good. Panasonics plasma doesn’t even try. If you are looking for a really great TV, the UN55C8000 is the one to buy this year!!” – Gunnar B. Podolec(Corning,NY,USA)

Extra Features

The Samsung UN55C8000 has an Ethernet port on the back allowing it to connect directly to the Internet using the Internet@TV interface. This interface lets the UN55C8000 retrieve content from a number of popular sites including Yahoo!, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, eBay, and many other sites. Widgets represent these sites so people can easily choose what they want to see online. It also includes some interesting pre-loaded content including fitness exercises and cooking recipes. Amazon Video On Demand subscribers can even order videos directly from their TV and watch them instantly. One of the most useful Internet features found on this particular model is the ability to make video calls using Skype.

The UN55C8000 can also stream content from devices on the network too using the AllShare feature. As long as the TV is connected to a wireless router, any wireless devices that have storage or are DLNA-certified are available for streaming. Another option is to use the new Samsung LinkStick Wireless LAN adapter. Competing models offer this too, but UN55C8000 can connect to multiple devices simultaneously. It also features a built-in digital tuner to eliminate the need of an external box.

Bottom Line

The Samsung UN55C8000 includes all of the best network and Internet features expected from a 55-inch high-end model and tops it off with 3-D support and LED foundation. Although a pair Samsung 3D Active glasses needs to be purchased separately to take advantage of these features, the UN55C8000 has plenty to offer underneath a very green package.

Received this TV last week. Simply stunning. Ultra slim. Had this wall mounted with the wired Internet connection since the cables were hidden anyway in the wall. The picture is so bright its almost unbelievable. I own an LCD and I’ve also seen the best of plasmas but this 8 million:1 contrast ratio is out of this world. 3D experience was good too. Saw the Shrek Blue Ray 3D movies. FYI- I’m using HDMI 1.4a cables.” – T.Sawyer (USA)

Paired w/Samsung Blu-Ray & a Home Theater Receiver. “Samsung” set-up flawless. Internet TV “5″; 3D “3″. Used Sanus 18″ telescoping bracket mounted inside a large wall recess behind TV with internet, cable, and 120v power. Thin TV appears to be hanging like a picture. We installed 2″ plastic corrugated tubing from recess to built-in cabinets below for wire hook-up to blue-ray, home theater, and cable boxes. When all said & done, pricey, but amazing finished look and function.

TV set-up exceeded expectation. Internet TV self-loaded all popular sites (Netflix, YouTube, etc.). Navigation intuitive. Download streaming of movies no issues (Time Warner). Did not try wireless internet because wired access was not difficult here. Even self-proclaimed TV “expert” friends are surprised especially by white/black contrast. Sound quality from TV speakers also an unexpected highlight. As for 3-D, free starter kit (2 goggles & one movie) takes sting out of purchase. Still a bit of a novelty but effects are amazing. At least glasses are comfortable (even over reading glasses) for length of movie. In summary, TV function is as good as it gets. “ – Timothy A. Logsdon(Phoenix, AZ)br />
