Screen
Movie fans, gamers, and sports aficionados in your family will all throw their fists in the air and yell “Yesssss!!!!” when they see fast action with crystal clarity on the UN55D6500. The 55-inch gives you the “big-screen” feel that HDTV was made for while delivering clear images and booming sound.
Picture a footballer for Manchester United streaking toward the goal at high speed! The image is free of blur and banding due to Samsung UN55D6500’s AutoMotionPlus. This feature, exclusive to Samsung, ingeniously estimates what an image would like between frames of a video signal and inserts that into the data stream. You basically get more images in the same frame speed—the result: a smooth, clear, powerfully vibrant picture.
Movie fans especially will appreciate Ultra Clear Panel, another Samsung breakthrough. They’ve figured out how to absorb ambient light hitting the D6500 screen and significantly reduce the glare bouncing. You also get increased contrast ratio which will enhance natural hues and sharpen shadow detail.
Cabinet
The Samsung UN55D6500 55-inch cabinet features LED backlighting. These tiny bulbs are much smaller than CCFL-based systems. As a result, the engineers can build a much slimmer screen—just over an inch thick, adding a modern look to the décor of your home or office.
The thin bezel comes with the popular Touch of Color accents, which adds splashes of amber to the black frame, providing a warm counter-balance to the futuristic TV cabinet and clear glass stem.
Set-Up
The UN55D6500’s physical set-up is not difficult but the company suggests two people work on it due to the size of the screen. Consider opening the box and pulling out the stand and attaching it while the TV is still in the box. Then set the TV on the ground and slide the box off. Of course, this won’t work if you are going to mount it on the wall.
Recommended viewing distances for a 55-inch screen are a minimum of 7 feet and a maximum of 13 feet. For tight spaces like wall cut-ins or entertainment centers, make sure to leave enough room for ventilation.
Picture
Samsung is famous for their pristine picture quality on their large panel TVs. We put that to the test with a viewing of the new 3D Blu-ray version of Image Entertainment’s “Ultimate G’s: Zac’s Flying Dream.” Our hero Zac is a kid with a powerful dream- he wants to fly.
It’s also a great demo for the D6500’s range of color and ability to handle fast action. After he grows up, Zac has to battle his arch-nemesis in some real life duels in the sky. The footage is awesome action of two planes battling in acrobatics against deep blue skies. This was originally an IMAX release – its massive sense of space really shines in this 3D version delivers a fantastic show.
Part of the secret of the great picture is Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer Pro feature. It analyzes each pixel and stretches it out like rolling pizza dough. The entire color spectrum is bigger and brighter, with brilliant luminosity and vivid detail.
Sound
This movie is also a great demonstration (they should keep a copy of this video in the stores) of the power of SRS TheaterSound with MTS multi-channel technology. The only thing keeping from thinking you are at a theater is the lack of a snack bar in your living room. The movie is loud! Planes swoop through the soundscape from left to right and back to front with aggressive action. The UN55D6500’s two 10-watt back-facing speakers are small but mighty performers and give this 3D movie a stellar sound reproduction.
For even better realism, add a simple and powerful external sound solution like the single-cabinet ZVOX 575HSD sound system. With one cable the ZVOX is easy and fast to set-up and you’ll get a sound experience the Chicago Tribune called “better than some theaters.”
Additional Features
Remember when you were a kid and you loved eating Cracker Jacks and getting the added bonus toy inside? The additional features of the Samsung UN55D6500 are so long it’s like getting multiple toys inside. Smart Hub is a simple menu system that lets you search for movies, shows and videos via online services or from connected devices (you can even connect your DLNA devices wirelessly with an optional USB Wireless Adapter).
The D6500 lets you browse the web with the built-in browser, or fire up Samsung Apps, the world’s first HDTV apps store. Samsung Apps let you chat with friends on Facebook, tweet your life’s activities all day on Twitter, watch crazy videos on YouTube, listen to your favorite bands on Pandora, watch movies on Netflix and much more.
For 2011, Samsung and other large HDTV makers have expanded production considerably. Some people have raised concerns about the impact of all these HDTV’s on the environment. Samsung hears the consumer concern, and has won awards from the ICES due to their energy efficient designs. As an example, UN55D6500 is more energy efficient for 2011 than it was even a year ago and beats the tough new Energy Star guidelines.
Conclusion
Samsung continues to lead innovation – their entire consumer electronic division is following the “Smarter Life” theme set for 2011: Smart Design, Smart Experiences, and Smart Connections. UN55D6500 is great example of this as it offers more Smart features on-board than any Samsung HDTV in history.
While Facebook and Twitter are great, Samsung did not sway from its core commitment to the best picture available on the market. And with the current low pricing available, now is the time to give it a serious consideration.
