Sharp LC52D65U
There is one good way to test-drive an astounding product like the Sharp LC52D65U in order to see first-hand what it can really deliver. Hook up a DVD player, load the disk in which the boxing bout between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar Dela Hoya that was recorded from the TV broadcast, fast-forward to the seventh round of the match, and watch the show.
As the scene progresses into the part where Dela Hoya receives punishing punches from Pacquiao, and the camera is at an angle where the ring rope is at the background, the LC52D65U recaptures the excitement of the round through a vivid presentation of everything taking place at the moment: the red gloves of Pacquiao moving forward and backward in rapid succession, the facial expression of Dela Hoya as he bounces against the gloves with every punch he takes from his opponent, his upper body vibrating vigorously in cadence with the intensity of the action.
This “test drive” brings out the excellent video rendering made possible partly by the 2 million-pixel screen resolution that comes packaged with the LC52D65U and partly by the proprietary Advanced Super View technology behind the TFT LCD panel.
The realism of the imagery is not affected by the fact the image source is not a high-definition player. High image quality is maintained even if the optional Power Saving feature of the product is turned on.
Actual user review:
“After returning a defective Samsung LN-52A550, I decided to give this a try. Boy I made the right decision! Ignore any contrast ratio rating by so called experts. This is the one to own. Aquos picture is the best in the business. Clarity of pictures is so amazing. So crisp on HDTV, that we can’t help on watching more blu-ray on it. I also use this as an awesome monitor while I type this review. I was also considering the SONY KDL-52V4100. Picture is not close to this Aquos.” – A.Agbayani (Guam)
Power Saving Feature
Energy Star, a program that helps users and business organizations protect the environment by means of energy saving efficiency, has rated the Sharp LC52D65U as having complied with energy saving standards through the Power Saving feature.
When the Power Saving feature is turned on (it is disengaged by default), it causes power consumption of the video display to be optimized on the basis of what is contained in it. It also activates Optical Picture Control (OPC), a feature that senses room lighting, when the Advanced option is chosen. The user can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor so that if, for instance, no signal is detected after the lapse of 20 minutes and there is no activity of control buttons on the unit or on the remote, the TV is automatically turned off.
Other Interesting Features
The LC52D65U has features that appeal to advanced users: white balance for red, green, and blue, which can be used to enhance the default or chosen color temperature preset; dynamic picture change to optimize contrast; image compensation setting; full color management; noise reduction; and monochrome mode setting.
Connectivity is excellent on the LC52D65U. There are a total of 5 HDMI inputs which is generous by any standard. Other jacks include two component-video, one VGA-style PC (1,600×1,200-pixel maximum resolution), one RF for antenna or cable, and two standard-definition inputs (one composite- and one S-Video).
Conclusion
All the good points of the product sufficiently justify its price, which is currently a steal below $1500. The relatively affordable price, decent picture, and power savings of the Sharp LC-52D65U will certainly make it a popular HDTV.
- “Only had this TV for a few days now (got it on 12/5/08). Ordered it with Amazon and it arrived within a week with no issues. So far I love it – the picture looks so amazing. Upgraded from a 45″ Projection LCD I’ve had for about 5 years now and I feel like I’m watching HDTV for the first time again. It has more inputs then I’ll ever need – can’t see me ever using up all 5 HDMI ports. Even tried hooking up my Laptop through the VGA port and it was crystal clear.” – D.Prietti (DC,USA)
- “Unbelievable picture and clarity. I also purchased the cheetah mount and had this TV on the wall in less than an hour. Saved a lot of money compared to buying at bestbuy etc. No negatives about this TV at all. I was comparing this to the Samsung and Sony V series….just got a heck of deal on this and I am not looking back.” – J.Kenyon (PA,USA)
