Many people are realizing the importance of the 1080p resolution, but there are so many models available coming from different brands making it a bit of a chore to pick the right one. Sony is a good brand to choose and the EX500 series is one of the latest offerings that are actually affordable. However the size of the TV can remain questionable and the EX500 series comes in 5 different sizes. Fortunately, every size including the smallest 32-inch model features 1080p Full HD resolution so getting the smallest one nets you the most savings without sacrificing resolution quality. Though that may work for some people, high resolutions look a bit better on 40-inch displays and above making the Sony KDL-40EX500 a decent pick.
There is a 40-inch model under the EX400 as well and it has the same technical features. The Sony KDL-40EX500 is rich in HD inputs offering 4 HDMI inputs, 2 HD component inputs and an HD-15 input. This means that you can plug in a Playstation 3, Xbox 360, or any future gaming console that will use the HDMI connection along with Blu-ray players and other modern peripherals. The HD-15 is helpful as well if you plan to use the HDTV as a large screen monitor for playing the latest games or watching multimedia content from the PC.
“After pretty much researching TVs to death, we purchased the Sony Bravia EX 500 and couldn’t be happier. We wanted a 40″ TV because it would fit nicely in our TV Armoire cabinet. I throw value into the equation, so I don’t hesitate to give this 5 stars. In summary, we’re very happy with the performance of the Sony Bravia EX 500. At present, I don’t know if there’s a better combination of price and performance. We’re value conscious, so we’re extremely satisfied with this purchase.” – T. Miller(Belmont,CA)
The Sony KDL-40EX500 is a step ahead of the EX400 model in terms of technologies with the addition being the Motionflow 120Hz technology. The performance of Sony models that lack this feature is already impressive as it reduces blur rather well, but this technology doubles the frame rate so the intensive action scenes look smoother than ever.
To maximize the viewing experience under any lighting condition, the Sony KDL-40EX500 features 2 sensors which are the LightSensor and Ambient Sensor. The Ambient Sensor controls the color quality where it would automatically fine-tune the picture settings if there are changes in ambient light. This makes it more convenient to watch content during the night time without changing presets or settings using the remote.
The LightSensor technology senses the lighting conditions the same way the Ambient Sensor does. But instead of changing the color settings, the backlight settings are affected primarily to conserve power. The LightSensor does a great job in adjusting how much backlight power is needed in relation to the lighting condition so images stay clear both day and night.
Another technology that separates it from other 40-inch 1080p HDTVs is the engine itself. Called the BRAVIA Engine 2, a digital processor is built-in to the TV which constantly works on keeping the images sharp and the colors optimized. It does a fine job in reducing noise so content looks good in any resolution.
The extra features remain the same as the KDL-40EX400 model having some nifty essentials that regular consumers would enjoy. Most consumers these days have a couple of USB devices and peripherals lying around such as digital cameras, digital camcorders, and flash drives. These devices are normally connected to the PC when the content needs to be viewed. Owners of the Sony KDL-40EX500 can plug these very devices in the USB input that it features as well so images and even music files can be viewed or played on the big display.
Other consumers own other Sony devices including surround sound systems, Blu-ray disc players, and certain digital cameras. If any of these devices are BRAVIA Sync capable, you can take advantage of the BRAVIA Sync feature that the Sony KDL-40EX500 possesses. This is a nice convenience feature that lets you control any BRAVIA Sync capable device with the same Sony KDL-40EX500 remote control leaving consumers in full control of their entire Sony-branded media center.
The Sony KDL-40EX500 still manages to fall under the $1,000 mark costing roughly $800. Considering the overall performance and image quality of the TV, the Sony KDL-40EX500 is a good model to get for futureproofing especially if the larger extras such as Internet connectivity, network connectivity, and 3-D technologies are not needed. The Sony KDL-40EX500 is a TV that is focused on keeping all components in the home theater connected and viewing experience enjoyable.
Actual User Reviews:
• “We spent at least 2 months searching for the right television. We looked at Best Buy, Sears, Sams, WalMart and found our best deal at Amazon. The reviews for this tv were good, however the actual TV exceeded our expectations. There was a negative comment about the remote and the “chirp” sound when the TV comes on. The remote is great and we like the “chirp”. The picture and sound quality is absolutely the very finest that we have seen anywhere. We have purchased Sony for at least 20 years now and this one is our finest yet. Shipping time was several days less than originally promised, the set was in pristine condition, set up was simple and easy and we were enjoying our tv within 15 minutes after we opened the box. WONDERFUL!” – Bobby(TX, USA)
• “I bought this a couple months ago as a first flat screen TV. I paid the price that Amazon is selling it for now which is 790 dollars. I am pleased with it. When I first got the TV there were times when the picture wasn’t perfect for what was playing. During the Where the Wild Things Are Bluray the browns didn’t come through just right. So I changed a few settings and yes… then it was perfect. I use this TV for a PC monitor, for browsing the internet, for Netflix watch it now, for blu-rays, and for upconverted DVD’s. I bought a Sony BDP-S360 and am pleased with the quality of the upconverted DVD’s on this screen as well. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference between Blurays and DVD’s. Animated films seem much clearer on Bluray. I play games like Titan Quest on this and they have never looked better. I’m looking forward to playing a good mmo on it. Great TV. Good price. This one should last for years. I found no other screen I liked as much as this for the price.” – Leonard C. Moses(Tennessee, USA)
