The makers of Playstation and Vaio have pushed the boundaries of technology once again with the introduction of the Sony KDL-46HX800, a 3D HDTV under the BRAVIA line. This sleek 46-inch LED HDTV is Sony’s latest entry to the growing 3D industry that is becoming popular with many other electronic companies.
Latest Update: The Sony KDL-46HX800 is now on sale at Amazon.com
The KDL-46HX800 is capable of playing full 1080p HD content at the maximum screen resolution of 1920×1080. Sports fans and fast-action movie watchers will be pleased to know that it also has Motionflow PRO 240Hz to eliminate any traces of motion blur. This is done by quadrupling the video frame rate and inserting three entirely new frames for each original frame. Your viewing experience is enhanced further with the 24p True Cinema feature. Sony is one of the few companies that can enable you to experience the original quality of cinema movies like never before. If you often stay up late to watch movies, the Ambient Sensor feature will ensure that you will get the best quality of pictures under low light conditions.
The key attraction in the KDL-46HX800 is its 3D-ready ability. The 3D mode automatically switches on when a 3D signal is detected. In order to utilise it, you would need to have 3D viewing accessories such as the 3D active glasses and 3D sync transmitters. They have to be purchased separately from Sony. It is good to know that Sony has included a wide variety of 3D viewing options in the KDL-46HX800. You can adjust the depth of the 3D image or set the level of brightness while viewing the videos in a 3D display. One of the interesting things that you will be able to do is to display 2D pictures as simulated 3D. This would be quite useful considering the limited amounts of 3D content that are currently available.
The KDL-46HX800 does not function just as a regular TV as it works perfectly well as an outlet for many different media formats. Like many other HDTVs, it is DLNA certified. It can display JPEG pictures from cameras. It can also function as a digital photo frame that displays your photos in a slideshow. The other type of media formats that the KDL-46HX800 could handle are MP3, AVCHD, MPEG 1 and MP4. There are 6 HD inputs consisting of 4 HDMI and 2 other components. Other vital connections include 1 USB port, 1 Ethernet port, 3 analog audio inputs and 1 digital audio output. Connecting the KDL-46HX800 to other Sony products can be done easily with BRAVIA sync. It allows the Sony TV to communicate with other Sony products when they are connected to the HDMI channel.
It is vital that today’s HDTVs are able to connect to Internet to ensure that you are updated with the latest media content from all around the world. The KDL-46HX800 fulfils that requirement very well with its internet connectivity. BRAVIA Internet Video allows you to stream hundreds of media content from the Internet and includes applications such as Netflix and Youtube. You can have the option of connecting to the Internet via the Ethernet port or through a USB Wi-Fi adapter. The USB Wi-Fi adapter has to be specifically from Sony as regular adapters will not work.
“Just got this unit a couple days ago. First, setup was a breeze, menu driven and easy to follow. Took less than 5 minutes, including internet connectivity. If you have a Netflix account, the setup was also super easy. I connected my set to a Dish Network 922 VIP HD reciever and I have to say, the picture is excellent – maybe not perfect, but darn close. Colors are accurate, bright and the picture is sharp and smooth. 240 Hz makes a huge difference from 120 HZ or 60 Hz. You will be impressed. Remote is simple and comfortable in your hand. The menu’s are quick, responsive and easy to follow. Little need for the manual. Good number of inputs for your sat/cable receiver, home theater, blue ray player and game system. Xbox looks amazing on this thing and I am sure a Playstation looks just as good. If you are looking for a entry level, 3D ready, quality LED-LCD TV, you cannot go wrong with the HX800. The price is right and you will be impressed by this set.” – K.R.Struck (CO,USA)
The KDL-46HX800 provides excellent quality of 3D images that are displayed on its screen. Ghosting and crosstalk is almost non-existent. The Sony 3D glasses complemented well with the TV as it syncs well with the TV by minimizing any flickering. It must be noted though that 3D performance can vary depending on your sitting habits while watching television. If you tend to lie down while watching television or lounge around during TV time, the 3D effect might be lost. Color tinting may also occur if you tilt your head. As such, it is best that you maintain a posture of sitting upright to watch TV to ensure that you get the optimum quality of 3D performance from the TV.
The 3D performance may be impressive but its 2D performance is even more spectacular. Your Blu-Ray videos will look absolutely stunning when it is played on the KDL-46HX800. The color accuracy is brilliant and the details of the image projected are razor sharp clear. The Motionflow PRO 240Hz works wonders when you are watching sports matches. This is a perfect complement especially when you also want to utilise the 3D ability to watch sports channels like ESPN 3D.
The weakest link in terms of the performance of the KDL-46HX800 is its sound system. The built-in speakers are simply too small and it doesn’t produce sufficient bass. The sound quality is at best only for listening to the news. It is not one that you would want to depend on to watch war movies or live concerts on your TV set. This is however, a minor problem as many buyers of television usually connect their sets to an external audio system.
It is hard to disassociate Sony from the gaming industry with its prominent status as the creator of Playstation. Compared to its other competitors, Sony has much in-house knowledge in churning out products that would enhance gaming experience. The KDL-46HX800 is fitted with a ‘game’ scene display option which you can select from its scene mode menu. It further enhances the picture and sound quality from your gaming console, particularly the Playstation 3. The KDL-46HX800 will also enable you to play next generation 3D games like Gran Turismo 5 and Motorstorm 3D Drift in its native 3D mode.
You will find the Sony KDL-46HX800 to be a great addition to your living room. With the superb 2D and 3D experience, it will certainly be a breathtaking experience for anyone who is watching this TV in your house. It is good to know also that the TV does not suffer from the same problems of backlighting like the other LED TVs in the market. Overall, the KDL-46HX800 is another masterpiece product from Sony which any prospective 3D HDTV buyers should consider.
Actual User Reviews:
• “The TV is quite attractive itself – sleek and modern. The TV was easy to set up and get running. In 2D, the TV is indeed impressive. SD pictures are very good, but the HD picture is pretty spectacular. Bright, crisp, great colors – beautiful! If you’re a videophile, you’ll probably want to mess with the settings. I find the 3D very convincing. Unlike some other brands I sampled, I did not detect any crosstalk or ghosting. I’m really looking froward to seeing content developed with these kind of TVs in mind. The HX800 includes a 2D to 3D conversion mode which worked better than I expected. The glasses work well to block out ambient light, though I found them a tad tight, so I hope Sony makes a pair for goons like me with big heads. On the bright side, they include adjustment so I can get them to fit on my 8-year-old daughter and I don’t have to spring for the kid’s model. The sound is only acceptable for TV speakers, but most people getting this TV will be using it with an external sound system, so no big deal. The included speakers are certainly OK for short term use, or in a small room where a home theatre set-up isn’t practical.” – M.Smith (IN,USA)
