Picture
The Sony KDL-55HX729 is a 3D-ready HDTV which means it does not include Sony’s active shutter glasses with the set. To fully enjoy the 3D technology you must buy Sony’s 3D Active Glasses (TDG-BR250). The 54.6-inch screen runs Sony’s Motionflow XR 480 blur reduction (240Hz refresh rate combined with backlight scanning) to deliver smooth video sequences during fast sports and action video. The Sony Bravia KDL-55HX729 features Sony’s Deep Black Panel technology. This maximizes the transmission of LCD images for superior brightness and contrast. The TV’s low-reflective, clear surface delivers high contrast, accurate colors and real details. With the Deep Black Panel technology blacks are blacker, highlights more intense, image details are sharper and colors are more accurate.
A point worth discussing is how 2D picture looks that is not HD. One problem with larger HD sets is that they may distort a standard definition (i.e. not high definition) signal. Sony’s X-Reality Pro engine does a good job tuning standard definition input. Now don’t expect HD quality viewing, but since not all broadcasts are delivered in HD it’s nice to know non-HD television viewing is most satisfactory.
Sound
The Sony KDL-55HX729 delivers virtual surround sound from its three rearward facing 10-watt speakers that include left and right channels and a central woofer. The speakers are mounted on the back of the television. This is a bit different and it means the sounds emits from the back of the set. However, if you depend on the television’s on-board speakers for listening to the audio, not to worry. The audio system has preset optimum surround sound profiles to use based on the HDTV’s placement on the wall or stand mountings. The S-FORCE front surround feature delivers a virtual surround sound experience using just the two front speakers. The sound profiles also include a 3D mode to capable of delivering a virtual 3D sound experience. The set also features an audio equalizer capability for custom sound profiles.
Internet Applications
The Sony KDL-55HX729 features Sony’s video and music Internet streaming content and provides access to your social applications like Facebook and Twitter via widgets. Bravia Internet Video acts as the entry point to Internet audio and video content, delivering a large number of entertainment options with the KDL-55HX729. Once connected to your LAN with a high speed connection, the Bravia Internet TV provides a wide variety of movies, TV, video and music to instantly stream. After buying Sony’s compatible microphone and camera combo, you can fully run the video calling app, Skype. This allows you to make voice calls or chat via the television and Internet connection. The high speed Internet connection is also the main avenue for upgrading any of the software, apps and firmware on the Sony KDL-55HX729.
Cabinet
The KDL-55HX729 has just a 2 inch thickness if mounted on the wall for a nice wall display. The deep black panel is seamlessly constructed of Corning® Gorilla® Glass which is strengthened at the molecular level providing a strong, light weight display. The screen is specially designed to reduce glare in bright rooms and looks great no matter if the set is on or off. Weighing in at 56 pounds with its stand and having a 50 inch wide cabinet, this HDTV will require two people to set it up and mount the panel for viewing. If using the included stand, the depth becomes over 12 inches, but you will benefit from the stand’s 20 degree left/right and six degree up swivel capability.
Set-Up
The Sony KDL-55HX729 channel and feature setup is simple and fast using the on screen guides and the included remote control. The TV comes with a Quick Setup Guide booklet and the TV’s full owner’s manual can be accessed using the remote’s i-Manual button. Set-up includes optimizing your sound output, establishing your local area network and Internet connections for software and firmware updates. While the KDL-55HX729 is ready for HDTV viewing in minutes, to enjoy the 3D experience you need to purchase Sony’s active shutter 3D glasses. They are not included with the 3D HDTV. This is a bit of a disappointment because many other sets ship with at least a single pair of glasses. Just be forewarned that you need to add 3D glasses to your order.
Energy Guide
This set is Energy Star qualified. The television’s built-in motion sensor has the ability to scan the room and detect movement. If there hasn’t been any movement for a pre-determined period, then the set turns itself off.
Connections
The connections on the KDL-55HX729 are behind the left side of the screen facing left and down. To the left are two easily accessible USB connections, two HDMI ports, a computer connection, and the audio connections for headphones, optical audio-out, and a PC audio-in. Facing downward you will find two more HDMI ports, a component connection, the cable or antenna connection, and the wired Ethernet port for a LAN connection.
Conclusion
Sony has always over delivered on their HDTVs and the Sony KDL-55HX729 is a superior addition to their lineup. It will compliment your room’s lay out and décor with its sharp, dark monolith design. As an Internet ready HDTV, the Sony is capable of being upgraded over the Internet with new features and Internet applications so you won’t tire of its capabilities any time soon.
