Sony KDL-60EX700

Spending more than $2,500 for an HDTV can be a bit much especially when you can find a much affordable TV of the same brand with 1080p specs for a third of the cost. However, if the required size for the TV is 60 inches, expect high prices no matter what model it is so it is best to get the top of the line model so the large display really stands out. Sony offers two 60-inch TVs in the EX series and the price difference is just about $450. The feature comparison between the KDL-60EX700 and the KDL-60EX500 is quite vast and the KDL-60EX700 is the definite pick for those that want online connectivity and DLNA certification.

Technical Features

The KDL-60EX700 features a refined design making it slimmer than other 60-inch BRAVIA models. Two HDMI ports can be found on the side of the TV and two more can be found on the back as well which should be enough to connect Blu-ray players, DVD players, gaming consoles, and other portable devices with HDMI ports. The large display is well suited for gamers and recommended for Playstation 3 owners since Sony manufacturers the gaming console as well.

Actual user review:
“I got my 60EX700 yesterday and I am really happy with it. It is a great TV. There was a little flashlighting and uniformity is not perfect but it seems you can tune it quite a bit. There are an amazing amount of settings and I have it set to be more than acceptable for me. Great price on a great TV. Contrast is great with deep blacks and white whites. The Motionflow is great also. Furthermore, the sound is acceptable for normal viewing and much better than I expected due to all the people dissing it. I have a nice theater 5.1 setup but I don’t want to use that for everything and the Sony sound is just fine. Netflix and internet stuff is great, the remote is fine. This technology is getting so good we are really picking nits at this point. I just hope it is engineered to be reliable and long lasting because I intend on having this in my living room for the next 6-10 years. I am sure you can spend a lot more and buy a better TV with better picture quality but for this price… killer TV. The only downside is the TV is so thin and light that I feel nervous holding the bezel when I have to put in the inputs. It is solidly built but it just looks so fragile.” – T.Craw (CA,USA)

Technologies

The KDL-60EX700 is powered by the same engine that powers the other EX models which is the BRAVIA Engine 2. This empowers the image quality so the blacks are very deep and the whites are pure. It also works with the Edge LED backlit display for clearer details and good contrast overall.

It is also a top performer when it comes to high motion clips such as action movies and sports as it possesses the Motionflow 120Hz technology. The doubled frame rate helps keep the visuals sharp without the unwanted blur effects.

The Sony KDL-60EX700 is the most intelligent of the EX series with three different sensors that aim to converse energy and maximize viewing convenience without interacting with the device very much. The Ambient Sensor keeps track of the ambient lighting condition and makes adjustments to the picture and color settings automatically so the image looks good in any circumstance. The LightSensor analyzes the ambient lighting in a similar fashion, but adjusts the backlighting levels instead so the TV does not appear too bright if the surrounding light is bright as well. Reducing the backlight also helps save energy.

These two sensors are present in the lower-end EX models too, but only the EX700 features a third energy conserving sensor called the Presence Sensor. This sensor can detect the presence of a viewer. Once the sensor no longer detects anyone watching TV, the image will shut off. The TV will continue to operate for 30 minutes if there is still no one in range of the sensor. After this time, the TV will switch to stand-by mode to conserve even more energy.

People that frequently turn off the TV do not realize that stand-by modes also consume some energy and the only way to put the energy consumption down to zero is to cut off the power source. This is not necessary for the KDL-60EX700 because there is a switch in the back that conveniently reduces the power consumption to nothing if the TV won’t be used for a while.

Extra Features

The Sony KDL-60EX700 also comes with Internet features that require an Ethernet cable to be connected from the router or modem to the back of the TV. Once it detects connection, the BRAVIA Internet Video can be utilized where viewers can access many online services including YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, and several other services. Wireless functionality can also be achieved by using a special Wi-Fi adapter that is sold by Sony separately.

There is also a USB input found on the side of the display to make it easy to connect various USB devices that have storage memory including digital cameras, flash drives, and MP3 players. As long as the Sony KDL-60EX700 detects familiar image and audio formats, the unit can display the images or play back the audio immediately.

Bottom Line

The Sony KDL-60EX700 is well-rounded with premium features that any multimedia enthusiast will enjoy. The $2,700 price tag could be enough money to buy a basic 3-D TV. This is a nice large model to get if 3-D technologies do not matter much.

Actual User Reviews:
This TV is set on my wall in a large sized room that makes it look mid-sized. Several others have commented on how great it looks. Blu ray movies are fantastic on it. I haven’t had it hooked up to the internet yet, but I’m hoping that it is a fun aspect to play around with. So far, my family and I love it!” – R.M.Clark (USA)

Quite possibly one of the best TVs that money can buy. The black levels, non-dynamic contrast ratios, picture quality are all the best I’ve ever seen – and I edit video for a living. The added bonus features of being able to directly-access Netflix, YouTube, and Pandora right from within the TV’s menu’s is a HUGE bonus for me — completes negates the media center PC I used to have running next to my TV in my living room. Its ability to pass-through 5.1 DTS HD audio via an optical audio out-port is also a major plus when using those aforementioned features. I would recommend though — don’t buy this, such an awesome/expensive, television unless you indeed to watch ample amounts of Bluray content on it. TV is broadcast only in 720p or 1080i… and you’re not getting the most out of this Bravia. I likely watch one or two Blurays a week. So for me, it was a worthwhile investment. If you watch Blurays, buy this set.” – J.B.Paula (NH,USA)
