Toshiba 46G300U

There are some HDTVs that are simply priced too high and some consumers may not know the exact reason why. If they are looking for TV that looks good and displays exceptional image quality, they may not need to reach very far by getting an LED or 3D-ready model. Although these models have substantial advantages, LCD TVs continue to work well which is why Toshiba has a series for those types of consumers. The Toshiba 46G300U is one of the members of the series that lets go of features like Edge LED and Toshiba Net TV but still manages to impress with a large display that can still do a few tricks.

Technical Features

The front panel of this 46-inch TV shows a nice gradation which Toshiba refers to as the Horizon design. It gives the display that modern look and the logo adds to the aesthetics in a stylish way. A removable stand is also included so the 46G300U can be optionally wall mounted. There are also invisible speakers mounted to the bottom of the bezel which provide 20 watts of decent audio power.

One of the features that make the 46G300U unique from other mid-range models is its interface. The Channel Browser can show up to 32 channels that were previously viewed with 5 of these channels having images. Browsing through the different channels can be just as convenient if the user spends some time with the Channel Labeling feature. Users can assign names to the channels for easier identification. There is no need to hook up a tuner either because an ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital tuner is built into the device. This tuner supports digital broadcasts off air and “cable-in-the-clear” broadcasts. The onscreen menu that presents these features is available in English, Spanish, and French languages.

Although the Toshiba 46G300U lacks a few technologies that improve the image quality, the Color Temperature Control makes up for it by letting users decide how the image looks. There are some presets available that affect the white balance to suit their comfort of viewing. Three TheaterWide modes are present as well so the widescreen imagery can better fit in the 46-inch display. There is even an optional Native Mode which fixes the normal over-scanning problems by restoring the true size of the picture.

The display features 3 HDMI ports on the back which are sufficient for a Blu-ray or DVD player, gaming console, and other device with HDMI support. An additional HDMI port can be found on the side which is ideal for portable devices. It also has two sets of composite inputs while the entry-level and high-end models have only one set.

A few of the enhancements are applied to certain types of content like the “Gaming Mode” which is ideal for gamers that connect their favorite gaming consoles to their display. The game control delay is reduced while the mode is active thus giving players improved reaction time. Those that prefer watching movies will enjoy the Cinema Mode so movies can be enjoyed in their 24-frame format.

“Just bought this TV 5 days ago and love it. I used to sell TVs and best buy and circuit city. So i know how Toshibas are. they might not be the TV with the most features but definitely you can’t beat the quality and price. I looked at many different sets and this one is just an awesome value. Are there better TVs out there? yeah of course. But for the price you can’t beat it. It’s just awesome. The 120hz on this is very good. The black levels are awesome. It’s really thin for being a normal lcd thats in a midrange category. “ – B.M.Sparks (USA)

Technologies

Not many technologies are present in the Toshiba 46G300U compared to its LED cousins but the ones that are included provide some nice boosts like the 120Hz ClearFrame which doubles the standard refresh rate so high-speed motion clips look smoother and less blurry. It also features the DynaLight Backlight Control which adjusts the backlight intensity automatically by detecting the available ambient light. Deeper blacks show as a result and can help save energy despite the lack of Energy Star certification. One of the more unique technologies is the InstaPort technology which decreases the time it takes to switch A/V components that are connected via HDMI.

Extra Features

The Toshiba 46G300U does not have Internet connectivity, but an Ethernet port is still present so it can be a part of the home network and access content stored in computers. A USB port is also present which serves as a photo viewer and an MP3 player. After any USB flash drive is plugged in, the TV’s remote can be used to browse through pictures just like a digital photo frame. Connecting devices through HDMI has an added benefit too thanks to REGZA-LINK which lets users operate these connected devices using the same TV remote.

Bottom Line

The Toshiba 46G300U is conveniently priced at under $1,000 which is actually a good deal for its size. The display quality is average but ordinary TV users shouldn’t mind especially if it focuses more on user friendliness.

Actually, I would rate the Toshiba at 5 Stars except for the rather anemic speaker system. 10 watts per channel is marginal for regular broadcasts; inadequate to compensate for the volume loss associated with most DVD & Blu-Ray players. Since most of the TVs I looked at share this problem, I guess the manufacturers assume you will add a surround sound system to your new HD TV.” – G.Marotta (IL,USA)

I’m a toshiba fan. I own a toshiba laptop and it has been a great computer. However, I was disappointed with toshiba on the quality on this TV. The picture was as good as it gets, couldn’t ask for better. The downside was the stand was made of flimsy plastic that felt as if it could break at any moment and the sound was extremely sub par compared to Samsungs comparable TV. If picture quality is all you care about then this TV would be a good choice.” – J.D.Vanslyke (TN,USA)

This TV will take a normal TV show and make it feel like you are actually in the same room with the actors. You can actually see every freckle and detail on the actors faces. Easy HDMI hook up for computers and it doesn’t miss a beat when syncing the audio from a home movie. You can’t go wrong with this set. Sure it’s not a 3D TV but think how many times do you want to wear those glasses that give you a headache after the movie is over. If your looking for an awesome TV with phenomenal sound and resolution at an affordable price this ones a no brainer.” – K.R.Day (TX,USA)
