The Toshiba 52XF550U has every major feature you could think of and very easy to set up. When it comes to HDTVs for the average consumer, people want something that has balanced features for an affordable cost. Many people suffer from getting the low-priced TV displays that fail to impress in terms of quality. The REGZA 52XF550U aims to provide flexibility by offering several different options of people on a tight budget and those that want the full cinema experience.
Overview
The Toshiba 52XF550U may be old, but it is still a REGZA model and still deserves praise for the different features and technologies it has. This 52″ TV has 1080p full HD display and sports a Super Narrow Bezel Design that makes the 52XF550U a great centerpiece of any home theater system. And if you’re into minimalism, it’s a stunner. The bezel is amazingly thin compared to other sets allowing you to fit this large 52 inch screen in most home theatre setups.
Actual user review:
“Just got this LCD last night and without even tweeking it yet I was very impressed by the color compare to the Vizio 46 that I returned from Costco. Comparing the two TVs is not an option. Now I can see real blacks and the color is so amazing. I know it will be better when i start tweaking it with my calibration software. Like I said, just right out of the box I am very impressed. Im glad I chose this TV. For so many months of studying the next HDTV for me. This is the exact TV I really wanted.” – A.Faylona (WA,USA)
Key Features
All REGZA models have the highly robust PixelPure 4G 14-Bit Internal Digital Video Processing, which explains why the picture quality is so good. It is aided with 120Hz Anti-Blur processing known as ClearFrame for smooth visuals without the blurring and DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control, which serves as one of the automated features that can adjust the brightness levels of each frame, based on certain parameters. Black levels were generally good, though a bit bright on the darkest scenes. When tested with hi-def sources the reproduction of scenes were very good with subtly shaded light-to-dark areas. Film-mode operation effectively eliminates jagged edges on movie content. The 120Hz technology effectively reduces but does not eliminate motion blur.
Other features that are part of the REGZA lineup are the various TheaterWide Modes for enhanced viewing of HDTV signals and DVDs and Cinespeed LCD panel which makes high action images a lot cleaner and more theatre like and granting wider viewing angles. An interesting setting that isn’t found in the lesser models is the Color Temperature Control that allows customization of the image white balance based on personal tastes regardless of viewing environment.
Also similar to the newer REGZA models, the Toshiba 52XF550U has the two core audio features that differentiate the 52XF550U from its competitors. The SoundStrip Speaker System does away with the large round speakers by incorporating thin speakers instead. Not only this makes the TV look better, but also the dynamic range is significantly enhanced and the big home theater sound quality is preserved.
Console and PC gamers will enjoy this TV display with the gaming mode that it is included as a setting. The gaming mode reduces the amount of time needed for signal to travel between the controller and the TV. The 3 HDMI ports, S-Video, and 15 pin D-Sub make the 52XF550U a decent monitor companion for gamers to enjoy big screen visuals. The other audio feature called StableSound eliminates those annoying instances of escalating volume fluctuations when different programs or channels are transitioned.
Conclusion
Though it is better to get the newer XV series, people on a tight budget that wants a good roundup of features may still find the 52XF550U to be a good choice. It still has a great set of features while keeping the price below $2,000. Anyone seeking for a balanced 52 inch 1080p TV shouldn’t feel disappointed with this model.
- “When I opened up the box I was immediately amazed at how sleek and modern the screen looked. It looked great just sitting there in my living room. When I turned it on I was shocked by how much cleaner it looked than my old Sony particularly with HD inputs. Blu-ray alone was better than being in a movie theater particularly with Pirates of the Caribbean. Like any high def TV regular TV is disappointing compared to HD signals but it looks fine from my standpoint. The other big selling point on this TV is the 120hz processor which makes sports and action movies have less blur.” – D.Smith (MA,USA)
- “I bought this at an electronics store. In a line up of about a dozen 50″+ LCD and Plasma tv’s of varying prices, I picked this one out immediately as having the nicest, sharpest picture. I went into the store “just looking” and came out with this TV, spending $2500.00 (about $1000 more than I intended.) Looks great in my room, I particularly like the sleek design (not much border on it). The few HDTV stations I get look great, DVD’s look good (not great like they would on Blueray, but I will wait a bit for Blueray player prices to come down.) All in all, very satisfied with this nice looking (but pricey) TV.” – D. Shepherd (WA,USA)
