Toshiba 52XV545U
Building a good home entertainment system requires careful selection of quality components that deliver the best experience possible. But the one component that can either make or break your entire home cinema experience is the television display. HDTVs these days aren’t all about size and style.
When excellent quality is desired, choosing a TV is difficult because there are so many high-end 52-inch models that claim to deliver the best image quality. One good way in buying the best TV is by observing what technologies are brought to the table. Toshiba successfully does that with the latest lineup of 52-inch REGZA models and the Toshiba 52XV545U is one of the high-end versions.
Overview
The Toshiba 52XV545U is part of the new XV series that replaces the older X series. One of the noticeable things about it is the improved design with thinner bezel and rounded edges. Unlike the 52XV540U model, the 52XV545U is referred to as the Cinema Series because of the long list of technologies it contains. This is a well-rounded 1080p HDTV with accurate images with and good contrast.
Key Features
The Toshiba REGZA has a lot of image processing power and the PixelPure 4G 14-Bit Internal Digital Video Processing contributes to most of it. This gives the 52XV545U the capability to reach 4,096 levels of gradation to produce a natural and smooth picture. Other technologies support this robust processor including the ClearFrame 120Hz Anti-Blur Technology which doubles the frame rate of standard LCD displays eliminating blurring of high speed segments and the DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control which automatically adjusts the lighting of every frame based on the scene so deep blacks are more emphasized. The ColorBurst Technology also improves the pureness of colors and the saturation as well making the visuals more vibrant. Exclusive to the 52XV545U, this REGZA model supports Deep Color.
Other nice additions include the SRT Super Resolution Technology, which enhances 480i/p and 720p input signals to look like 1080p and a clever AutoView setting that can adjust the picture quality depending on the scene and ambient lighting. Very good reproduction of scenes with subtly shaded light-to-dark areas. Its excellent film-mode operations effectively eliminates jagged edges.
Actual user review:
“There is so much to love about this set. My favorite feature is the SRT which makes even standard definition broadcast look great. The SRT is a feature I am very happy about. This TV made HD look amazing so the SRT is what really makes this set stand out. Build quality and casing look good.” – E.Murphy
Its color temperature is slightly on the cool side. To achieve decent color accuracy you have to fine-tune individual colors in the submenus, a more complicated procedure. Also, viewing angle is somewhat limited, so the picture lost some color, contrast, or brightness if you are not near the center of the screen. This TV is thus best used in a dedicated home theater setup.
The audio features are decent as well with the SoundStrip Speaker System that effectively keeps the speakers thin without sacrificing audio quality and the StableSound feature that makes sure that volume levels are normalized when channels are switched. There is also a nifty feature called half-mute, which can be activated by pressing the mute button twice. This is useful for answering the phone when it rings and you still want to hear the TV.
Like the other models, the 52XV545U has a gaming mode, which is ideal for gamers because of faster response times, but what separates this from the rest are the Channel Browser and Channel Labeling features. The Channel Browser allows users to easily scan through the last 32 channels viewed while the Channel Labeling labels channels to make them easier to identify.
Conclusion
The Toshiba 52XV545U is on the top in terms of features and that’s why the price is well above $2,000. This 52-inch 1080p Toshiba offers a winning combination of strong performance and value. It is especially well priced for a set that includes 120Hz technology to reduce motion blur and all the connectivity options it has.

“This is simply a superb television. We had looked at others in the 52-inch class that cost less and actually were going to go to Costco and buy a Sharp when we went elsewhere and saw this set. Amazon’s shipping was fast and the delivery guy helped us to set up the TV and showed us the controls too.” – T.Jones
