Families that have a lot of space in their living rooms can rightfully maximize their space by getting a large display. A display as large as 55 inches is ideal for the viewing distance ranges from 96 to 168 inches. Of course, these displays are more expensive but looking deeper into the different selections reveal that some are hundreds of dollars more than others because of the included features and technologies. Spending more than $2,500 on a display will likely result to a unit with good image quality, excellent energy saving features, and delightful extras. Although the Toshiba 55G300U isn’t full on with features, it still makes a good impression for anyone looking for an affordable 55-inch display.

Technical Features

One of the aspects that Toshiba focuses on with the 55G300U is the design and its approach is to apply a nice looking gradation on the bottom bezel for appeal. This design is known as the Horizon design and the logo blends very well with the look. Although it looks as if the TV does not have speakers, 20 watts of audio power the display from the invisible speakers and are located on the bottom bezel.

The built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital tuner removes the requirement of an external tuner and Toshiba offers some extra ways to browse through channels. The Channel Browser provides some backtracking accessibility allowing viewers to see the last 32 channels they browsed. The recent 5 channels also come with image previews. Labels can be added to every channel using the Channel Labeling function so viewers know exactly what they are watching.

The user interface is offered in English, French, and Spanish and it allows offers some flexibility of the picture quality. It starts with the Color Temperature Control where users can apply different presets which control the white balance such as the “Warm” and “Cool” settings. The three TheaterWide modes add to the flexibility giving options on how the picture fits in the screen. These modes are ideal for high definition streams while the Native Mode can correct the over-scanning problems.

Technologies

While the Toshiba 55G300U isn’t anywhere close to Toshiba’s flagship 55-inch models, the display features some good technologies that make this model a bit more advanced than other LCD displays. The 120Hz ClearFrame gives all types of segments that double frame rate boost to reduce blur and make high-speed segments more fluid. The 55G300U isn’t Toshiba’s most energy efficient model either but the DynaLight Backlight Control effectively does its job in setting the appropriate backlight intensity level so it best suits the outside lighting so energy is saved. The black levels are also improved thanks to this feature. The InstaPort technology is one of the more features as it solves this common and annoying problem when switching to other A/V components. There is a short delay when changing to other HDMI sources and InstaPort technology simply corrects this problem.

Extra Features

An Ethernet port is located on the back of the display but the Toshiba Net TV feature is absent. However, the port can still be used to connect with other computers in the network and many competing budget 55-inch TVs lack this feature. The Toshiba 55G300U also doubles as a large digital photo frame and MP3 player thanks to the present USB port. Any flash drive containing images and MP3s can be inserted and played back accordingly. Then the remote control can be used to control the flow. That same remote control can operate other devices connected to HDMI through the REGZA-LINK feature.

Bottom Line

Those that are expecting a plethora of features may want to pass for a higher-end model, but the $1,599 price tag may turn a few heads that simply want to see their favorite 1080p content on a huge display. The Horizon design does not make the TV look cheap either and the user interface is impressive for its price.
