Toshiba 55SV670U
One of the largest HDTV stallions in the Toshiba stables is the Toshiba 55SV670U, and at 55 inches this is certainly going to get noticed in even the biggest of living spaces. The price tag is hefty even for a screen this size, but it is the superior LED based LCD. So, does this television fall at the first hurdle or will it score a clear round and canter off with a highly recommended rosette on the noseband?

Toshiba Regza 55SV670U
Overview
Sticking with the horses, just because we feel like it, the Toshiba 55SV670U is the thoroughbred of Toshiba’s stables. This is their showpiece set and they are naturally incredibly proud of its achievements. They claim that this is the best looking television to ever roll off their production line. In fact they believe it is beautiful. Whilst we wouldn’t go that far we do think that it looks good, but it is pretty similar to other Deep Lagoon nature inspired designs that Toshiba have released. Sleek and black works well to describe it so we are happy with that too. Again they seem to be sticking with a frame that is about an inch wide, and we think that this is about perfect as it gives a good line without overshadowing the massive LED screen, which is clearly what this television is all about.
Actual user review:
“I had spent a year researching and saving for a TV. I had originally decided on the Sharp 65″ Special Edition but the 2009 models started to show up. I started to check out the latest Samsung LED. I was impressed. Sharp was no longer enough. I started to research the big three LED/240hz/55″ TV’s I could find, LG, Samsung, and Toshiba. I ended up buying this one because my research pointed to it being the best. I eventually bought it from Beach Audio through Amazon. It was amazing. My wildest dreams were surpassed by light years and I wept in the warm glow that filled my living room. This TV is amazing. Also, Regza-link seems to work with Bravia-link.” – M.Bertrand (IL,USA)
Key Features
There is nothing understated about this television looks wise, so we thought we had better stop standing looking at it and plug it in, add our gadgets and gizmos and see what happens, and if the performance is as good as the styling. The Toshiba 55SV670U has five aspect ratios which are more than enough, and we found that for 1080i and 1080p sources Native Mode™ gave rise to the best pixel scaling. This high definition television also features Dolby® Volume which is a nice touch as we all know how good Dolby technology is, and has been certified by the DivX®‚ team which is always a reassuring mark on high definition televisions. So again, another plus mark is added in favor of the Toshiba 55SV670U.
We were impressed with the color clarity of the display. The colors are true to reality. The sky was naturally blue and the trees and grass were also life like shades of green. This is one of the few Toshiba’s we have seen recently that successfully makes full use of their ClearScan 240™ technology, and as well as anti-blurring capabilities which we know work well this also gives an exceptional performance on black colors. The blacks have true depths and even in the shadows there is clarity, and you can see the picture perfectly which is very impressive considering some of their other televisions struggle big time to sort black depth. However, remember this is their flagship product so we would expect good things, and we are still impressed as we press on with the testing.
Connectivity wise there are more than enough output points. There are 4 HDMI connectors, as well as VGA, USB etc – all the standard stuff that you would expect to find – and all neatly positioned on the back and the sides, which leaves the sleek lines on the front of the screen. The connection of a PC via both HDMI and VGA was good and the performance was what you would expect on a television of this quality.
The Toshiba 55SV670U features the very clever AutoView™ technology, which sets up every conceivable level automatically and makes watching different pictures a breeze. It sorts the contrast, brightness and clarity as well as many other settings and really is a user-friendly intuitive piece of kit. The only fault we could find with the picture quality was jagging on images such as the flag waving on a flag pole, which is irritating for a screen at this level, but given its many other positives something we could live with.
Conclusion
The Toshiba 55SV670U is a stud in the stable and is a definite race winner, and we would definitely be placing a bid on this horse in a race. There is build quality and performance quality in spades, and Toshiba have been a major player in the field for many years and are a well-known and respected company, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that their flagship model is top of the range. If you want a very large LED style LCD that oozes style and quality then this is for you, so get saving those pennies.

- “I also did a lot of research when looking for a new LED tv. You cannot find another tv that has the same features for this price. The closest was the Samsung UNB6000. Samsung matched everything the Toshiba had except the local dimming and 240hz refresh rate. The thickness didn’t matter to me. My only complaint about the Toshiba 55SV670U is the screen can give off some glare and the color green is not as accurate as it should be. BTW, I paid $1000 less for the Toshiba!” – S.W.Massey
- “Phenonimal television and at a terrific price compared to other LED’s of the same size. Extremely easy to wire up to a surround sound system and even easier to operate with nothing but a stellar picture! Worth the wait and do not regret a single thing about the Toshiba LED 55 television.” – R.Bonner
