Toshiba 55ZV650U
If you are looking for a larger high definition television then you may want to consider the Toshiba 55ZV650U which has just been launched by Toshiba as the largest screen in their ZV650U range of high definition gear that is designed to be the center piece of your home entertainment unit. What is the hype behind this family of televisions sets, and why would you choose one of these instead of another Toshiba television, or indeed in favor of a different manufacturer?

Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U
Overview
This really is at the top end of screen size and at a whopping 55 inches really is going to be the focal point of any room, and unlike some of the plasma televisions most of the LED’s are just too heavy for safe wall mounting so do have to stand either on the floor or on an appropriately sized unit. We have said before that Toshiba products do look good, and this is no exception. It has a glossy black finish that is stylish but doesn’t detract from the actual screen, and all the jacks and connectors are at the back and sides so won’t be seen.
The major selling point of the ZV605U family is the ClearScan 240™ technology which gives the picture a 240Hz effect when switched on, rather that the 120Hz that it really is. It is software technology that emulates the effect rather than actually changing it to 240Hz, and is sadly a bit below par. The teacher would have certainly marked this as ‘could do better’, as although the anti-blurring function is very good the rest of the picture issues that are solved with a real 240Hz television just aren’t with the emulator. The black depth for example is not so clever; it leaves blacks looking rather gray and washes out the over all picture quality.
Actual user review:
“THis is an excellent TV. Picture quality is amazing and there is excellent connectivity ports on the back and side. The viewing angle is amazing also – as good as a plasma. Can be viewed from all angling in our living room with no problems. I would recommend this TV – excellent TV.” – J.DiNitto (USA)
Key Features
It goes without saying that the Toshiba 55ZV650U performs on a par with the other two television sets in this family, and to be honest we were a little disappointed with the overall performance on all these units. They were tested in tandem with a Sony and Samsung and neither of these show any issues with black depth, both giving darker, clearer blacks that added to the overall picture, but the color on the Toshiba 55ZV650U was the top ranking of the three. It was an excellent color level and we didn’t really need to use the added color management function as we found the colors perfect at the point of switch on.
In terms of connectivity, we were again left a little disappointed by the performance with a PC connected. What the set was capable of it did well. It gave rise to an excellent display at 1920 x 1080 source when connected via the HDMI connection port and a good 1360 x 768 source display when connected via the VGA port. However, anything above these wasn’t good, and there are plenty of LCD televisions that can definitely provide a better performance from VGA connection.
These three Toshiba high definition televisions were the first three sets in a long time that failed our standard-def 2:3 pull down test and sadly we had problems with jagging, and even when we played with settings and turned on the Resolution + function the flag that was flying in the film still showed jagging at the edges, so sadly more to add to our already negative review. Added to this that for some reason Toshiba tried to copycat Sony and bring out a shiny screen rather than a matte screen, which just had the effect of giving a lovely reflection of your favorite shirt on the screen when the room is brightly lit, and we are starting to struggle a little here.
Conclusion
We are looking to find a positive with this set, and it does seem to be the color quality that does just that, but there are simply a whole host of negatives. It’s not that the set is bad, it’s just that for the money and size you can get better from else where, which is going to be disappointing for Toshiba if they realize that these are not well received, but really, they fell short of the mark on just too many issues. We would love to send them back to work on them for just a bit longer and fix some of the issues, and then this really would be a class high definition television set that is well worth its money.

- “Got this at a great price. Best video ever. So sharp and clean, colors are brillant. Best gaming ever on Xbox 360 and PS3. Its so much fun to watch tv in HD. I recommend this tv to anyone who is looking at HD. Easy to set up. Sony hasn’t even released their 240 hz tv’s yet. Toshiba beat them on price and speed. One feature that I love is the remote control is programmable, it can control my home audio system, dvd player and is very easy to set up. I like how there are 4 HDMI ports and since my computer has a HDMI port, watching facebook on this 55″ HDTV is so much more fun. The SD video card reader is a plus. I love to take photos and then I can view them right on the tv. As sharp as it is, the photos look like you were there on the screen as you view them.” – N.M.Stephens (USA)
- “This TV is everything I was looking for and more. You can’t get a better TV for the price. I have a good friend who paid twice as much for a Samsung LED TV, his picture quality does not match the Toshiba. It comes mounted on the stand and ready to sit on a piece of furniture. The TV looks gorgeous without it even being turned on. Toshiba did a great job on the design. The picture quality is amazing. I am a sports fan and haven’t seen a picture this nice until now. The Toshiba ClearScan 240 handles the speed of the games. All of the HD Discovery and Science channels are breathtaking. I have the TV sitting with 3 large windows to one side. I was concerned about how the light would affect the picture during the day. The TV is bright enough to overpower the light from the windows. It has an ambient light sensor and automatically adjusts the picture. It also has a special coating to prevent reflections of ambient light. The features of this TV are amazing. I also considered Samsung and Sony. I found this TV to have better specs and features than the other brands. The price of the Toshiba makes it a no brainer.” – J.D.Hon (USA)
